or other assets we have (Bradley, Smart, Rozier) to improve the team? Or do we just stand pat?

Regardless if Gordon Hayward signs or not, do we just keep this core and the assets, or do we find other players that could be immediate help and makes us a little better.

Which players could do that?

Could we take Andre Drummond of Detroit?

Can we take Derrick Favors and start a reclamation project?

Carmelo Anthony?

Is there a buy low, gain high kind of a player out there.

Or do we just stand pat and keep the assets and run the same core, with or without Hayward, with Jayson Tatum, and keep the assets for something else?

Roll it forward. Wait for the next opportunity.

One of these big opportunities will pan out someday.

By roll it forward, you mean trade the #1 pick for a lesser pick and more assets? Another one of those?

Favotd would be good.  Sign and trade for Gallinari, who should cost $18 or $19 mil per year.

I don't see Crowder being traded to be traded. Danny seems to love the guy. I also feel like we miss on Hayward...which means nothing changes with the overall roster for the better

Boston would just need to commit to building through the draft and waiting out the current arms race. Looking at 2021 in reality to win they could actually have all these young guys be really impactful and stars themselves

I would try to move him for a starting power forward or center if we manage to sign Hayward.

I don't trust Ainge building through the draft. For one, his draft record leaves a lot to be desired. And two, we get hyped up for the chance to win the lottery just so Ainge can trade it away

It would be really hard for him to screw up the 2018 draft with 2 top 5 picks. The guys are the top (Porter, Doncic, Ayton and Bamba) are all pretty easy to take

I agree he'll take on lots of PF minutes if he stays, and he'll be very good at it.

We can be opportunistic. Only do a deal if a good one presents itself. We are going to be really good if we get Hayward, and run everyone back. We have some very good players already. Continuity works... just ask San Antonio. With a little luck, we are a 60+ win team in an increasingly weak eastern conference, and Cleveland is starting to wobble a bit because of their ownership.

strong analysis, considering he's tried to trade him repeatedly for other / better small forwards over the last year.

Ainge has done fine in the draft. Not great, but good. The only big miss was Giannis, and truth be told, no one had any idea he was going to be that good. The vast majority of his picks have been mid and late rounders, those almost never end up as stars. Jaylen Brown is his first go at a high pick, so far he looks good. His other high pick was part of the trade that brought the second big three together. I think compared to any GM other than Pop, his draft record relative to where he selected is OK. Clearly it's too soon to know about Tatum.

Really? Because reports many times when trying to acquire Butler or George was he was untouchable. This was the first time I heard his name in real talks

Well if we sign Hayward one of Kelly (renounced), Crowder traded (plus smaller pieces), or Bradley traded is required to get the max cap space.  So if you renounce Kelly,  and trade Crowder by himself along with possibly picks it makes it tough because his salary is low.  Maybe someone like Favors but there won't be a ton of options. You could trade Crowder for a future pick to clear cap space, and keep and start Kelly.  Maybe Kelly would play better in the starting lineup, and be less inconsistent. Who knows.  You could just renounce Kelly and start Crowder as a small ball 4.  You could trade Bradley, my least favorite option, and start Hayward at the 2 alongside Crowder and Kelly.

If we miss out on Hayward I don't think it's the end of the world.  You could either work towards extending Thomas and Bradley, or even Smart for that matter.  Or you could use that cap space to upgrade the Amir, Tyler, Jonas group. Maybe split the cap space between a small ball 4 like Gallinari or Gay and a big like Randolph. Even then we would still be in the mix for ECF, and Lebron will be another year older.  Especially if 1 or 2 young players break out like Brown.

Big picture if Ainge plays his cards right we could arguably have the best young core 3 or 4 years down the road (with a few other teams in the mix like Philly, Wolves, Bucks), as many of these stars now on the best teams enter their 30s, and on the decline.
