I'm not great with the cap rules but is this still possible? I know Melo has some trade kickers and whatnots that make him hard to trade for (NTC aside). But I assume Melo can be acquired without having to include any of our high end picks or Brown/Tatum/Smart.

IT/shooting guard/Hayward/Melo/Horford is a formidable team, IMO. And Melo always plays engaged when he's against Lebron lol

Stevens has to close the deal with Hayward first. Who does Hayward want to play for Stevens or Spoelstra?

Who's to say that Ainge can't still make the same deal with OKC for PG13?

I don't think the CBA allows you to trade a player you just acquired. At least not until like late December or something.

i'd take melo only on a short cheap deal. use him while kids develop. if we get GH also and this group cannot win it all with IT, AH, GH and CA then dump him for someone else while we still keep drafting and developing kids.
LET'S GO CELTICS!

We would have to send out a ton of matching salary.  It would gut almost all of our depth.
2020 CelticsStrong All-2000s Draft -- Utah Jazz

Finals Starters:  Jason Kidd - Reggie Miller - PJ Tucker - Al Horford - Shaq
Bench:  Rajon Rondo - Trae Young - Marcus Smart - Jaylen Brown -  Peja Stojakovic - Jamal Mashburn - Carlos Boozer - Tristan Thompson - Mehmet Okur

It's a bummer that Melo makes so much because it makes a deal for him nearly impossible. He simply is not worth at least AB, Crowder, Smart, Jaylen.

You have to wait 60 days to trade a player you just acquired via trade if you're over the salary cap and you want to aggregate his salary with another player you're sending out.  If the Thunder wanted to turn around tomorrow and give us George (say, because Westbrook says he's not signing the supermax extension) they could absolutely do so.

I wouldn't remotely count on that happening, but if the Thunder wanted what the Celtics were supposedly offering Indiana, that deal could happen as soon as George is officially a member of the Thunder.

The good news - if you want to call it that - is if we somehow don't get Hayward, then Melo is all but ours. We will be bringing in an all-star this off-season, regardless.

I don't see why you believe this to be true.

The FA route is clearly the optimal move, hence Gordon. Gotta win that pitch first and foremost, which appears to have been the plan for a while now.

Sucks about these others stars who got dealt for relative peanuts but we are still sitting in a position of strength (provided IT gets healed up).

Carmelo would be interesting to me under CBS, but I don't see it happening.
