Because it benefits a player to be a free agent after 10 years, and Gordon Hayward has 7 years experience, it makes sense for him to want a three-year contract now so he can get really paid at the end of that contract.

This is from Whindhorst on the jump.

This would be fantastic. Then trade for George. Resign George for two years and make a run at a ring. Then George can bolt for the Lakers by that time they are likely much better.

Wonder if LeBron type set is best. Signs a three year but first year opts out for a raise. If team goes for Hayward and Griffin it's the only type contracts that make sense.

3 years starting at what?  Still about $29M?  Is it the same starting max?

It most likely will be a 4 year max with a player option on the last year. Hayward protects himself to maximize his money in case he becomes injured so bad that this is his last big contract. If he is healthy and still playing at max level, he can opt out after 3 years, in his 10th year, for his last big contract.

3 years with a player option for fourth.  Assuming he is fully healthy he would opt out of the final year and go from there.

I am fine with this plan, you can do the same for IT and/or Bradley and if it doesn't work trade them as their contracts are nearing the end.

 Good call Nick.

If Hayward signs a 3+1 max with the C's, it's highly likely he is gonna hit free agency in 2020. That's the year Horford's contract comes off the books.

2019/20 season
Horford $30,123,015
Hayward $32,670,000 (assuming that the cap will be set for $99 million next season)

SUM $62,793,015 coming off the books in 2020.

AD has a player option for 2020/21. ;)

Just wanted to reiterate the longtime feud between Ainge and Pat Riley goes all the way back to the 1980s

Might want to? I thought it was common knowledge and mathematically proven a while ago that a 3+1 is by far his best option and definitely the one his agent will push the most.

This is what has been bugging me about people who say Utah can pay him more....no.. not with a 3+1.

Boston radio has been huge offenders of this lack of insight.
