All these crazy contracts are making Avery Bradley and Jae Crowder look like really, really good trade bait.

Looks like Otto Porter has signed a max 4/106 offer sheet with the Kings.

I know it's unrealistic at this point, but that would be pretty sweet if Washington let him go and didn't match. That'd really help us with both the LA and Brooklyn picks, and it'd help an Eastern rival get significantly worse.

How do you get a max contract averaging 13.4 points and 6.4 rebounds? That's ludicrous!

Do it at the age of 23-24, and with the best efficiency in the league for your position.

$26.5 million per year still seems a bit steep, but that's the market.

It's also why people who think Oladipo is ridiculously overpaid are off-base.

Ridiculously overpaid? Maybe not, considering 4-6 other dumb contracts last year. Overpaid? Absolutely. And it makes Indiana's ridiculously poor haul for George that much more egregious.

If there was any comparison between the two players besides the number of years in the NBA that might be true, but Porter's numbers are far better than Oladipo's:

As for Oladipo's contract, it's not considered a good one.

Quote
A player's value in a trade is determined by his production on the court minus his salary. If Oladipo is fairly paid, he should have essentially neutral trade value. If he's in fact overpaid -- and my multiyear projections suggest he is, by about $16 million over the next three seasons -- then he should actually have negative value.

I've seen others say the same thing without the precision Pelton aims for. Oladipo's PER last season was below average as was his defense and had a PER of 6.9 with a net rating per 100 possessions of -25 in the playoffs. Maybe he benefits from getting away from Westbrook's domination of the ball, but this is his 3rd team in 3 years

Is Otto Porter the new Jeff Green?

Jeff Green never had a season 75% as good as what Porter just had, nor showed the year-to-year improvement the Porter has throughout his career.  Yes, the deal bets that a player who's 24 will continue to improve, but many players do improve from that age, and this one improved significantly every season so far.

Their similarities end at body type and alma mater.

Jeff Green Career 13.5 pts 4.7 rebounds 33 % 3pt

Otto Porter Career 9.3 pts 4.4rebounds 38% 3pt

He said "season."

Jeff Green 2008-2009 season  16.5 pts 6.7 rbs .38 3 point
Otto Porter 2016-2017 13.4 pts 6.4 rbs 43 % 3 point shooting

I'm not sure the NBA's salary structure problem is realistically fixable.  The problem is that it's not a free market.  You'd either need to create salary slots where teams designate their best player gets X, their second best player gets X-1 and so on, or only allow one-year deals so every dollar you spend on player 1 is a dollar you can't give to player 2 through 15.

If you're stuck on points and rebounds per game as your metric, I'm not going to debate any further.

Who's that in the upper right?

Some dude named Durant.

Funny that according to this graph Porter and Hayward are basically on the same level. Hayward a little better offensively and Porter a little bit better defensively.

Considering that Porter is younger and has more room for improvement I find it amusing that lots of posters on this blog mock the offer Porter got from the Kings (which will likely be matched by the Wizards) for a max contract of 26 mln a year and at the same time would be ecstatic if Hayward finally decides to sign a max contract for 31 mln a year with the Celtics.

Something is not right, here.

TPA isn't my favorite metric, personally.  And Hayward's offense fits what we need more -- a second playmaker.  That said, I'm also the guy who started the thread in November saying that Porter should be our Plan C after Hayward and Griffin, and personally don't find Porter to be overpaid.

Two differences.

1.  Hayward has already proven he can consistently perform at all-star or near all-star level.  Porter hasn't.

2.  We're looking to pay Hayward a boatload of money to take us to another level as a team.  That's why we're willing to deal with the consequences.  The Wizards are going to have to pay that money just to remain in the same place.

Thanks. That's what I thought but was thrown by the "remaining FA" title.

He technically hasn't agreed to a contract yet.  Might not do that for a week or two.
