The best part of this is that it ties up all of the 18 Lakers, 19 Phil., and 19 Sac. none of which can be used in trade to upgrade Phil. roster at least until after the lottery is decided next year!  Those picks would have been competition for the C's in trades and can't be used by Phil. to upgrade their roster.

Very good, underrated point.

Sort of. The picks can still be traded.  For instance, PHI can trade 2018 LAL #1 (protetected 2-5); if not conveyed whichever pick does not convey to BOS in 2019.

Quote
The future first-round pick that Boston will receive will be the Los Angeles Lakers' first-round pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, provided that such pick is No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, or No. 5 in the 2018 NBA Draft. If the Lakers' 2018 first-round pick is No. 1 or is No. 6 or later, the Sixers will instead convey to the Celtics the rights to the more favorable of the Sixers' own 2019 first-round pick or the Sacramento Kings' 2019 first-round pick, provided that the more favorable pick is not the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. If the more favorable of the Sixers' and Kings' 2019 first-round picks is the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, the Sixers will instead convey the rights to the less favorable of those two picks.

Someone put together the flow chart.

EDIT:  Ah, see it was already done!

Protections flowchart:

Great flow chart!! TP!

INDEED!!  TP!

However, why do people think this is good??

If SAC gets #1 pick, we get PHI's pick.  Now if PHI makes the playoffs or close to it that will be a late lottery or mid-first round.

HOW IS THIS GOOD???

It should have been unprotected!!

Agreed... The #1 protection on the Sac pick kills this a bit for me. The only explanation is that DA thinks Jackson/Tatum is on the same level or better than Fultz. Only way it makes sense/if the Lakers suck next year it's obviously a good draft to have a few high picks in

So all the negative Nancy's, that hate this trade, are assuming that: Lakers will not be one of the worst 6 teams in the league next year. In '19 Sac will get the 1 pick AND philly will be a playoff team.

Ok that sounds like a lot needs to happen. For all you worry warts.

It does make the nightmare scenario a wee bit more plausible - for the deal as originally understood the Lakers pick would have to miss and the Kings would have to be a playoff team in 2019.

Sixers making it x Kings winning the #1 seems a bit more likely than that but then again so does almost anything.

What this means is that this extra pick has no chance of being #1, so if it is #1, Philly gets to add to their current core, and then we can really talk about a potential dynasty.

We just traded down for one protected pick. Good job, good effort.
In the summer of 2017, I predicted this team would not win a championship for the next 10 years.

3 down, 7 to go.

It's unlikely, but it's a possibility. That possibility makes the trade worse.

But the reason many of us don't like the trade is because the 3rd or 4th best player in the draft isn't as good as the best player. Top talent wins.

So they're protected at #1 for '18 and '19.  That blows.  It's somewhat ironic that Fultz was the unanimous #1 prospect, Tier 1, etc. and we still didn't seem to have the leverage in this situation.

I think we all agree that Sac will be a bottom feeder for the next few years. IF you believe that to be true, and they're the worst team in '19, and we get their pick, don't they have a 25% chance of getting 1? So we have a 75 % chance of getting their pick which would be 2-4?

So, if that plays out Danny traded #1 for #3 in '17 and 2, 3, or 4, in '19.

So in theory if the 76ers are nasty in 2 years we might have traded 1 for 3 and like the 26th pick...

the more that comes out about this trade the more it looks like Danny screwed the pooch on it.

couldn't leave well enough alone and just take Fultz.  just had to play games like he's smarter than everyone else and ends up getting fleeced by the Sixers.   jackass.

I get the protections on the Laker pick next year to ensure we don't risk them getting much better which isn't unreasonable considering they really tanked the second half of the season to keep their pick this year. however, I'm not sold on Sac or Philly being really horrible for the 2019 draft, certainly not Philly.  if that Sac pick lands at #1 I would bank on Philly being late lottery at best or completely out of the lottery as  low playoff team that year.

Fans are actually celebrating that the trade got worse?

It's highly unlikely that it got worse, though possible.

Considering we can't celebrate the #1 pick coming to Boston we all have to grasp at straws.

This. Exactly. The loss of the chance at #1 is huge. We all know how valuable the #1 pick is (or how valuable we thought it was, apparently).

Best player in the draft turns out to not be #1 picked a lot more than we're conditioned to think.
