Maybe I just don't get it. Sure he's athletic but really, I see an inefficient chucker who can't run a team. And yet, I see some posts that talk about how he should be in our rotation and stuff like this. I get that he's on a cheap contract and at some point, maybe beggars can't be choosers. But he seems like someone who should be an afterthought and not really someone who you'd have top of mind in your rotation.

What am I missing??

I don't get it, either. He may become a decent backup PG, but he's not a building block.

Yeah, people are willing to trade Smart over Rozier because he can score better, but thats about it.

Smart brings much more on the defensive end, which is great coming off the bench, and his ball handling and passing has become really good.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
-He appears to be one of the best athletes in the league with elite length as a guard.
-He has a great motor with ability to play strong man defense.
-He can get to the rim at will and also has a nice outside shot from the corner.

He isn't perfect - he can't run the PG position in the half court, he has trouble finishing at the rim, and his unlimited potential maybe running out with age and a less than stellar sophomore year.

Still, he has two years left on a REALLY cheap contract with plenty of time to put it together. He could be a huge tease, but he could also put all the finishing touches on his game and become a really solid combo guard with potential to be a starter. Danny likes athletes and Rozier is definitely one of them.

I don't think anyone is suggesting we trade IT and dump Smart and hand the keys to Terry. Most think he can be just that, a good backup, especially on his rookie contract. He's got talent, he just needs to put it all together. He's shown flashes, but very inconsistent.

I think that people forget that it takes  3-5 years to understand how to be a PG in the NBA.
Rozier improves each year.  Ainge is high on Rozier-for a number of good reasons.
I don't know if he will be a starting guard or a career back-up. However, he has promise.

I just think Rozier has more value to us than in a trade. HOWEVER, if we need to move him to match salaries, Id do it in a heartbeat.

There are plenty of reasons to trade Smart over Rozier that have nothing to do with believing Rozier is better than Smart.  Here are just a few: Smart is better and thus has more trade value; Smart makes more and thus can get to a minimum salary faster; Smart expires sooner and thus is do for a big raise sooner (and thus you might rather trade him than lose him for nothing if you aren't going to pay him); Rozier might be a better fit than Smart is with Fultz (I don't believe that, but it isn't unreasonable to think that way); Smart hasn't gotten better offensively and thus you might believe he is set while Rozier has shown signs of improvement and thus could still get a lot better.

I'm sure there are others, but I think you get the idea.

That said, I've been down on Rozier for awhile and for much of the year I felt he had almost negative value.  At the end of the year, he played quite well at times though, which gave me a lot more hope going forward, but honestly I don't think he plays hardly at all next year without some major moves because I fully expect Fultz to take all of his minutes.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

So you were down on him, but really high on TJ McConnell. Good to know.

Fun fact:
Avery Bradley is only 1 year older than McConnell. Yeah, 1.

Probably never a full time starter but the potential to be instant offense off the bench.  Top class quickness and athleticism.  One of 3 guys on the roster who can get to the hoop off the dribble.  Already hit some very clutch shots, has an ever improving explosive jump shot.  A decent defender, a spectacular rebounder, a good handle and improving decision maker.  He makes less bonehead plays than Marcus.

I like his game and think he is a very useful sub.

not sure I'd say there's a lot of love for Rozier but some have come around to thinking he can be a serviceable NBA player after dumping on him as a horrible pick -- particularly when Bobby Portis was still on the draft board.

I think he's got the potential to be a guard off the bench in this league in someone's rotation, maybe ours, maybe not.  he's definitely the 5th guard in the rotation if we draft Fultz so he's a real possibility of being trade chip rather than a piece of the next championship team.

Highest +/- for us in the playoffs. Can be elite at attacking the rim if can finish better. He's got good moves to get to the bucket. Eurosteps, fakes, etc. He always hustles and plays average to above average defense.

I want him as our backup PG behind Fultz.

Rozier was the only defender we had that could stay with Wall.
He has been getting better and better.
