I went in to today's game knowing very well that this was a game Boston can win, and a team Boston can beat.
Boston went in to the first 75% of this game believe this was not a game they could win, and this was not a team they could beat. You could see it in their effort, you could see it in their energy, you could see it in their body language. They did not believe in themselves. They had all the markings of a team that didn't believe they could win, but figured they would try anyway.
Credit to Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, Avery Bradley and Gerald Green - they were pretty much the only guys on this team tonight who looked like they truly believed they could win. In the last 25% of the game we outplayed that team - not because we were better then we were before, just because we TRIED.
This brings me to my point. People talk about what players we should chase, what holes the team needs to fill, having to add scoring, having to add rebounding, and all the rest. But there is one key thing that this team needs more than ANYTHING else - heart.
In the entire big 3 era, there was never a single Boston Celtics team who went up against any superteam thinking "we can't win this". There was never a time Paul Pierce or Kevin Garnett or Rajon Rondo faced Lebron and said "we can't beat him". That cockiness, that confidence, that pride and fire is as core to that team's success as their talent was. Those guys didn't fear facing Lebron - the LIVED FOR IT. They WANTED to face the Lebron's and the Kobe's of this league. They begged for it. They were driven to want to beat those guys.
What we need? We need a guy who has that mentality. We don't need Paul George. I don't even think we need Jimmy Butler. We need Carmelo Anthony.
People can say whatever they want about his flaws (and I know they are real) but I can promise you, without a sliver of doubt, that Carmelo Anthony will never fear Lebron James. He will never say "I can't beat that guy". You tell Carmelo his next game is against Lebron, and his eyes will light up like the sun. He lives for that moment.
Danny, if you can hear me - the Knicks don't expect that much. Put together a package, bring us Melo. Let him drive us with his passion and his confidence, and let our young guys breathe that in and learn/build off it.
There have been too many huge chokes in these playoffs for the Celtics. Dropping two to the Bulls at home. Getting into 15-20 point holes against Washington at least every second game, and having to try to dig the way back in. Completely giving up today against the Cavs. You can't have those meltdowns in the Playoffs, because a team like Cleveland will tear you apart. You have one game like that in a series (or one in the entire playoffs) and fine - every team has their bad day. But not ever second game like it's seemingly been for us.
This team needs heart. That is all.
