So glad we have him.
Yes. Some day he'll even might be a coach.

I don't hate Doc, but there is one thing i always think about when people call him fake and phony. He knew very well what kind of man Donald Sterling was when he agreed to go and coach him with documented cases of racism and some pretty dispicable behavior.

"In 2006, the Department of Justice brought housing-discrimination charges against Sterling for allegedly refusing to rent to African-Americans at his Los Angeles residential complexes. The suit was settled three years later for a record $2.75 million, with Sterling avoiding an admission of liability."

"In a 1983 incident, prospective Clippers coaching candidate Rollie Massimino says that Sterling used the N-word in an impromptu interview at LAX (via Jeff Pearlman):

“Here’s this guy, and he has this blonde bimbo with him, they have a bottle of champagne, they’re tanked. And Don looks at me and he says, ‘I wanna know why you think you can coach these n*****s.’”

In a 2009 wrongful-termination lawsuit that was eventually rejected by a jury, former Clippers general manager and NBA legend Elgin Baylor claimed that Sterling had a "plantation mentality."

From Baylor's lawsuit:

“[Sterling] said, 'Personally, I would like to have a white Southern coach coaching poor black players.' And I was shocked. And he looked at me and said, ‘Do you think that’s a racist statement?' I said, 'Absolutely. That’s plantation mentality.'"

Doc went to work directly for that guy and then acted blind sided and shocked when he a tape played of him making racist comments. He then out of his way to talk like couldn't coach for a team Sterling owned out of Morals.

That kind of said a lot about Doc's personality and camera personality to me.

Who cares?

Pretty much agree.

I can understand the interest in Doc since he coached our last championship team.  What I don't get is the doc hate.  Yeah he moved on, it wasn't like he stole your girlfriend or robbed a bank.  Doc was a good coach for us, he did a good job.  Why are people still so angry at him?

You're right, he didn't steal my girlfriend, but he did rob the Celtics. He left them hanging high and dry just months after signing a 4(?) year extension and talking about how he wanted to be in Boston for the long haul. He then bolted to "greener pastures" as soon as it looked like the Celtics were heading toward some tough times. I actually still like Doc for the most part, but he's a fraud.

In hindsight, Doc leaving was the best thing that could have happened, but we didn't know that at the time. I thought he was loyal, but he turned out to be just another ring chaser.

Oh man.  How exactly did he rob the celtics?  He changed his mind about committing to a rebuild.  Yes he could have handled it better, it was a bit shocking at the time.  People in real life change their minds about a big job commitment,  it happens all the time,  But he didn't rip off the celtics, we ended up with a great young coach better suited for the rebuild.

People in real life who sign employment contracts, aren't able to walk away as easily as you make it sound. Employment at will? yes, very easy to realize you made a bad decision and then walk away. Contractual employment? Not so much.

Just out of curiosity, what did you think about what those '08 Celtics had to say about Ray on Area 21 last week?

Most job contracts have a two-week notice standard. In fact, it's much harder to walk away from a contract in the NBA, especially if you want to work for another NBA team.

True. In this case, Doc had signed the contract months before he left so any grace period would have been over anyway.

And your second point about working for another NBA team is a great one. anyone who thinks I can sign an employment contract with facebook that includes a non compete clause and then just decide I want to go work for twitter while I'm still under contract with facebook is mistaken.

Again how did doc rob the celtics?  DA and Doc and the clippers negotiated his release from the celtics and we got a draft pick.  How is that doc robbing the celtics?  I just disagree with the doc hate, you are fine to feel that way if you like.  He wasn't the greatest coach of all time when he was here, but he was certainly competent and in the upper tier of coaches.

I was amused at the area 21 show with KG and the gang.  If they are still mad at Ray that is up to them.  I think that it is a completely different situation than the one with Doc.  It isn't analogous.  I can personally understand being more upset at Ray than Doc.

Just to be clear none of them seemed to be mainly upset about him leaving, they seemed mainly upset that they were friends and considered him family and did things together all the time as a group with each other's family and then Ray went to a competitor and didn't even give them a courtesy heads up or say good bye or anything like that.

Actually I kind of made a mistake there.  I didn't actually think they were still mad at him either.  More just disappointed friends wishing he had communicated with them.

So glad we have him.

LET'S GO CELTICS!
