  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Someone will do it.

I really hope Danny doesn't let it be Pat Riley...

Pat Riley and the Heat's ownership is known for taking care of their players - even after they retire.

Someone of Ray Allen's caliber will have his jersey hanging from SOMEONE's rafters and if not BOS it will be MIA.

Think about how many players Riley would have to immediately retire if he was going to retire Allens number off of 2 seasons of play

Glen Rice
Shaq
Haslem
Bosh
Wade (well obvious regardless, but one that is coming)
Lebron

Heck in terms of how much they contributed to the franchise you could argue old friend Antoine Walker made an equal contribution to their franchise. Played their two seasons, won a championship and was their second best player for most of the series in the Finals.

It really starts a dangerous precedent to retire Allen in Miami.

To me it doesn't.

One of the best shooters EVER in NBA history - clutch or otherwise.

I'd hope this blog's IMO irrational hatred of Ray Allen doesn't let this cloud his achievements.

My 'irrational hatred' of Ray Allen certainly DOES NOT prevent me from appreciating his many career accomplishments.  In fact, I fully support any move by the Seattle Supersonics to retire his number.  :)

I apologize to you or anyone else offended by my comment. It comes across with too wide a brush.

For SEA to retire his number those poor folks would first have to get a team.

SEA's rafters would have quite the collection of players - Shawn Kemp, Gary Payton, Dennis Johnson, Ray Allen and a few others I may be missing.

I still don't understand why if Seattle returned to the NBA with a team called the Supersonics, they could adopt all of those players and the history they created; however, if they went with the Bungholes [for instance], they would have to start from scratch.

I just wish there was some kind-of consistency in these cases.

I have to think there would be a major push from that region to call them the Supersonics again.

Also, with the history thing, there is already precedent there with the Browns.  So it has been done before.

Has there ever been a first ballot Hall of Famer without his number retired somewhere?

His best chance is Miami considering they are not very regarding in that area -- and how iconic his shot in the Finals was for them.

I'm not excluding the Celtics though after everyone has moved forward.
