Rozier was very frustrating for me all during the regular season but he has really stepped up during the playoffs. My hat is off for me! Great game tonight!
Honestly, I think he's just struggled to get into a rhythm with the sporadic roles / minutes he's been given.
Smart has been given 25-30 MPG every season so he's had plenty of time to get in sync with the system and with his teammates, get into a rhythm, work out where he fits in the team, etc.
Even Brown started to clearly play better once he started getting more consistent minutes and a bigger role.
Rozier has never really had that. He kinda plays sporadic minutes here and there, sometimes doesn't play at all. Tough to get in sync under those circumstances. If he had been playing for a weaker team like Minnesota or the Lakers, I'd be willing to bet he'd be putting up 16 / 4 / 5 by now and looking like a future star.
He has always been a very clutch player, and coming out of college he was actually known first and foremost for his defence, his leadership and toughness/competitiveness - even moreso then his scoring (which was also a standout).
But he was generally considered to be the top defensive player on a team built around defence, and kinda became the go-to guy on offence by default because nobody else on the team could really score.
In fact the only real criticisms he had coming out of college were concerns about his outside jumper (as he didn't shoot a very high percentage from three) and his tendency to sometimes force things a little. But he's proven himself to be a very capable outside shooter all season long, and his decision making during this playoff run has been great - he's moving the ball well and letting the game come to him, and yet he's still having a huge impact in limited minutes.
The way he's playing now on the big stage is certain to raise some eyebrows for the Celtics and around the league. I get the feeling Boston will be getting a LOT of calls about him come trade time, and if I were Boston I'd be very hesitant to let him go.
