Funny. I saw THAT thread, and thought "I have been thinking the exact opposite all day".

While I wont deny that it is clear that the Celtics lack the firepower to overcome the Cavs, I think that the reality is, Jimmy Butler, or Paul George don't enable us to beat the Cavs, just get less spanked. Do I want to lose Jaylen Brown, multiple picks, Smart and/or Avery or Rozier to just get less spanked by the Cavs?

Danny Ainge did a MASTERFUL job not giving up our valuables at the trade deadline. Cavs are too good. I was also in my office just yesterday telling everyone that the Cavs weren't SPIT. Boy did I eat my words. Enjoy that we have the playoffs now, and for years to come, and a bright future ahead of us.

PG went mano mano with lebron...all he need is the supporting cast...had PG had the firepower of IT and the defensive prowess if Horford there is a chance we dethrone the Cavs...Lebron aint gonna play forever and PG is younger by 6 yrs...
If PG signs even a 4 yr extension with us then im on board...there is no way to predict what Jaylen will become...sometimes he is passive after all he is arookie.

Smart plus Jaylen and the 2018 boston pick should do it..why would larry risk losing PG to the Fakers for nothing.

Last night's outcome could have been the exact same even if Paul George was on the team. Good teams get blown out at times. See GSW vs. Denver earlier this year. The argument isn't what would Paul George have done last night against Cleveland, it's what would we do in the playoffs with Paul George. That question of course is pretty complicated. If it's for the package that was reported at the trade deadline then we have no shot of playoff success. If it's as bopna mentions we could be more formidable than people think.

If there was a way of getting George and Butler while giving up picks and some players like Smart, Bradley and Brown I would do it to win now. For instance draft whatever player Bird wants and trade that player, Bradley, Smart and the Memphis pick to Indiana for George. Then trade 2018 Nets pick, Brown and the 2019 Clippers pick and some 2nd rounders to Chicago for Butler. If that could be done, while absorbing some salary with cap space while still being able to keep KO. Then the Cs have the following core:

IT/Rozier
Butler/Nader
George/Crowder
Horford/Yabusele
KO/Zizic

Selling our farm for PG wouldn't make much difference with the Pacers. Who will be PG's supporting cast if the BKN picks, Brown and Smart are all gone?

KO's cap hold is only $7.7 miliion or so. We might be absorbing a lot of incoming salary in those deals which could eat up most of our cap space. If so then the only money available if we don't keep KO might be his cap hold and in this market, are we really going to find a player better than KO for just $8 million or so. Heck that's what Zeller got last year. I'ld rather keep KO, as much as I can't stomach his play half the time.

Hopefully we wouldn't have to absorb much salary or we could redirect some of it to another team. Zeller got a 2 year deal with the 2nd year being a team option. KO may be looking at a 4 year deal @ 12-14M per year. That is way more than I could stomach.

I'm greedy, though.

I'd rather get Hayward (1st) (maybe not as good D as Butler, but free) or even Milsap (2nd choice) than Griffin (injury history). Then you still have some assets to make even another move if you want.

My knowledge of caps and holds isn't sophisticated enough to know if this would work, but those potential lineups are exciting:

IT/Rozier
Hayward/Brown
George/Crowder
Horford/Yabusele
KO/Zizic
