Let's say Isaiah Thomas wants the full max...

And he won't re-sign without it, and test free agency if Ainge doesn't agree to do so.

Do you trade him, let him go, or sign him for the max?

Need more context to answer accurately:

Is this a max extension this summer or actual new contract next summer?

Did we upgrade the team at all this summer with a big free agent or trade?

Did we keep the Brooklyn pick? If so, where did it land, and who did we pick?

These are all essential pieces of the puzzle that will determine that answer.

isnt there two shots to sign him to max? I believe 1st shot is coming up this off season but max at only like 25 million a season...or 2 years from now he can get max max at 32 million

either way, Danny is either going to offer max or trade him....  i doubt he will offer 5-7 million less for a 3 year deal or something like that

Alot will depend in what happens this upcoming playoffs... if we can't get past 1st round and IT4 is mediocre then Ainge probably wants to buy time and avoid signing him to max this upcoming off season

if IT4 is amazing, even if we lose in the 1st round,  try their best to sign him to the cheaper max

I would offer Thomas up for a top 3 pick this year. Not in love with the player. Surprisingly I agree with Potter. I prefer two way players and I think Thomas is more about himself then the team.

If you're going that route, trade for established talent.  This team doesn't need another draft pick.

Doubt you can get a top 3 pick for IT4...  especially with only 1 year left on his contract...

These are all critical questions.

My guess is this: if they land the #1 pick, someone is going to make Danny an offer he almost can't refuse for a young All-Star with control for 2+ years.  Then - and only then - will we find out Danny's true intentions for the next 5 years.

He either says (a) no way, which means he is trying to build a dynasty starting in 2020, or (b) yes, which means he is all-in on the IT-Horford-Crowder-Smart-Brown core (possibly Avery too).

If it is (b) then IT will be offered a max-extension this offseason.  He will accept, because it would be stupid for him to play out a full season making 80% less money when there are all sorts of possibilities  for injury or bad stats.

Not sure what you could get in terms of established talent. Also I wouldn't underestimate a team willing to part a top 3 pick for Thomas imo. For example I think the colangelos would do it. They wanted Bradley. It seems they want to win now. 

Also, I'm in love with this draft personally, otherwise I agreed, we don't need any more draft picks. I think the difference between our POV is that I personally consider Horford and Thomas as bridge players. We're basically relying on our picks to pan out in 3 years along with the veteran talent we have. Only way we can beat GS imo

lock him up this offseason for a 4+1 deal at the max.  He will still be 28 starting next season and in the fifth year be 32-33 years old.  By the time the contract (fifth-year team option) is up, The CEltics will have gotten the most max money years out of IT. 

If the team waits till he is 29, we will be paying him too much money when he is 33-34. 

It is only a concern if the Celtics think he will age rapidly after he turns 30-31.  At that point, he will have transitioned to the bench.

I think Id also trade him for a top 3 pick and I am VERY against trading him. I dont see us getting a top 3 pick for him.
