Would you trade the 2017 Brooklyn Pick, unprotected, for Joel Embiid

Yes. Embiid = Hakeem + Kareem / 2 with 3 point range. He's a superstar and injuries don't bother me.

No. He's got one working knee and is on pace to being the biggest "What if..." in NBA history.

A buddy of mine asked me this question and I didn't quite know how to answer. I figured I'd pose it to you guys.

In light of Embiid reinjuring his knee and the fact that he is now out indefinitely after only half a season of action, would you, today, trade the 2017 Brooklyn Pick for Joel Embiid?

Follow up question: Is this the kind of move that gets the GM on either team fired/regarded as a legend.

I think I'd probably do the trade, just because Embiid was so incredibly dominant for the half season he was healthy. The Celtics need a center and he's perfect. If you have a shot at a unicorn, you have to take it. Right? RIGHT??

Why does it feel like I'm trying to talk myself into this. What if he never walks again?! I have a bad feeling about this. I don't want to do it.

Really tough question.  Embiid is almost unquestionably going to be a better player than whoever gets drafted #1 in 2017, but oh man is it going to suck if/when he get injured.

The 2017 Draft pick is the same as Embiid...

If healthy, Embiid goes #1 consensus anytime.

But after hearing all the reports of his latest sustained injuries now?

No.

Thank.

You.

That is a terrible decision personally, and you're taking a calculated risk on someone that hasn't even managed to play a full year...

This guy hasn't played in 2 years... And after he's been out for 2 years with plenty of recovery time, he's been shut down once again.

So no. You're literally throwing darts on a board with eyes closed, hoping Embiid can stay healthy.

If he was playing right now? Yes, no question.

Right, but, like, he might heal and come back by next season bigger and more bad.

he's a unicorn. And it's not like the 1st pick in any draft is a sure thing. There's risk in Fultz, Baal, or anyone you can pick. And he's a center and fits our team perfectly.

UNICORN!...Ugh. I'm so conflicted.

Too much risk.  I'd think you'd be nuts to offer the BKN pick unprotected for that.

No, because as great as Embiid is, I honestly would want no part of living and dying with his every stumble and mis-step.  Plus, it seems that he's going to have recurring injuries every season he's in the league.

He may go on to be a many-time All-Star and win lots of games, but I think it'll always be kind of stressful to be a fan of his team.

another thing. How do we know Embiid is really injured? Maybe the 6ers just wanna tank a few more games so that they can get a higher pick. Maybe they got too good too quick and mgmt followed Embiid to his car and made him an offer he cant refuse?

You'd have to at least consider it.  But if Philly were willing to make the deal, you absolutely say no.  They know more about his health than us, and if they were willing to trade him for a pick that is inherently less valuable than him you run from that deal as fast as you can.

So, I guess I would have to say no

Embiid went 3rd in his own draft because of health issues.  Now that those issues are confirmed, twice over, why would you offer the potential #1 pick for him?

Why would you stunt the growth of your top play to tank some games you would probably lose anyway?

I'd rather take my chances on someone who hasn't already had a dozen injuries.

Tempting, but too much risk.

Remember, he missed the end of Kansas' season due to a stress fracture in his back.

He missed the big 12 tournament and NCAA tourney because of his back in his only college season.
He missed his first NBA season due to his foot.
He missed his second NBA season because he reinjured his foot
He only played 31 games his third NBA season because of his ankle

That's not a process I'm giving up this pick for.

>Is this a question?> is indeed a question.

About the poll, only time will tell how serious his health probs are. It will be a pity though to lose such a talent to injuries.
