I got around to reading Bill Simmons' Trade Deadline Mailbag column today and he's got a ton of Celtic stuff in there (some outdated now because of the Cousins trade) and while talking about a hypothetical Paul George trade was this little bit I found interesting:

Quote
The Celtics aren’t including Brown, Smart or 2018’s Brooklyn pick as a second asset for any deal that doesn’t include the initials “AD.” They’d rather stand pat and build their version of “A Dark Horse Finals Contender That’s Also Pulling Off a Stealth Version of Philly’s Process With These Brooklyn Picks.” That’s what the owners want, too.

He seems pretty confident about it. I think it's interesting to hear that ownership is totally cool with riding with the team it has now knowing that there are potential superstars on the way. I think this means we're not likely to see another all star coming to the C's in the next couple of days. Not enough pressure on Ainge to make a move.

Best post I've read all day. Hope it's true.

The players and picks folks want to give up for Jimmy "don't confuse me with Lebron James" Butler is comical.

Simmons is an idiot. I am confident, he has no idea what he is talking about.

Obviously just my opinion, could be completely wrong.

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

He is right.  The Celtics are second in the East right now on pace for a 50+ win season.  Smart is a 22 year-old that has a lot to do with that, and Brown is the 20-year old #3 pick from last year who is now a regular rotation player.  Then factor in that they are possibly sitting on the #1 pick in the draft!  And then another possible top-10 pick next year!!  The obvious move is to do nothing.

Why can't this team just make a run at Cleveland as-is?  Maybe they have a shot, maybe the don't, or maybe they don't have a shot regardless of who they add until Lebron leaves the Eastern Conference or significantly deteriorates in ability.  If the last part of that statement is true, then trading any of the Smart/Brown/BK picks is a horrible idea.

I don't have a problem with them not giving away their best assets.  But I'd like to see them clear some bench guys and grab a couple players to help this season.   Upgrades for JJ or Amir or at least get guys out of the way for Brown to play.   I'm sick of the extra long bench and playing time going to vets that won't help in two years.

Who cares about the media? They have their own agenda which is to create controversy and then profit off the resulting sensation. The media when driven by motivation to make money has no credibility.

that is the beauty of this team. The 'veterans' that are keeping Brown on the bench are young guys like Crowder, Bradley, and Smart. Nice problem to have.

If self-interest = no credibility, then no one  has credibility.  Adam Smith is rolling over in his grave.

I'm talking more about trying to upgrade JJ, Amir, Kelly, Young, Zeller   They should be able to combine some of these guys these other firsts to get upgrade players even if Danny doesn't 'win' the trade.  He needs to pull the trigger on something.    This team has too many holes to just sit still.

And Brown needs to play.  No matter who else is here.

The media wants Boston to make a splash, because without a Celtics move, the Eastern Conference playoffs are basically a foregone conclusion.

The only intrigue becomes, who gets to lose to Cleveland in the ECF.

It's not just the media, based on some of the threads around here.
