NBA confirms Smart fouled Butler

Obviously people here disagree but I thought it was a foul.  In fact, it's pretty obvious it was a foul.  So I have no problems with the call.

And frankly, hitting a shooter's elbow is a more egregious violation than many other plays with much more contact.  It's a no brainer kind of call and not one where you can reasonably expect the shooter to recover from.  I've had my elbow hit on shots and basically, you're pretty much done.

Now one can argue that they shouldn't call it in that instance.  I don't agree, especially for that kind of play, but you can argue it I guess.  Either way, who am I to complain about a correct call.

He never touched his elbow. All the replays confirm there was no skin contact. The play was a "guess" that there was contact because it was so close and mostly because they are protecting their star. If that was James Young shooting the ball and Butler was defending would there be a call? I didn't think so.

It's water under the bridge and we should have played better and some of our guys like "Kelly" should have hit his free throws. 50% is not acceptable.

Next time we play them we kill them.

I am 99% sure he hit him on the elbow.  Of all the angles they showed, the one from behind smart was the clearest.  So there is a chance he didn't touch him I guess.  But I don't agree.

Shoot, from the view behind Butler, you can see the spin of the ball altered.

Exactly. The game should have been ended 2-3 minutes earlier. By Celtics, of course.

No offense to Marcus—he's a great defender—but he made a mistake with how he contested that shot. He never should've been in the neighborhood of Butler's arm, never should've put himself in a position where an official could even consider the possibility that he committed a foul.

So the NBA is ok with the fact their ref called no foul until after he saw the ball ricochet off the rim?  Yeah, that is not ok and they know it.

If you are going to call fouls when someone's finger barely grazes someone, you will run out of players before the end of the first quarter.  B.S. call.

Here's what bugs me. Why watch the ball go and miss before you call the foul?

Is it a foul? Fine, it is. But then CALL IT as soon as the foul happens. Look at this ref watching the ball PRIOR to him calling the foul. Why wait till Butler misses to make the call?



If it's a foul, call it right then and there!

No replay shows any contact that I have seen. Can you provide the source that Marcus said there was contact or did he personally tell you this?

Hey, Marcus Smart is going to lose you some tightly contested games by fouling in the last few seconds trying to make a defensive play.  It's the same as a good offensive player taking a shot and missing late in the game.  This isn't the first time this year he's had a big foul late in a game, and it probably won't be the last.

Smart also went 1-5 for 5 points last night while Jimmy Butler went 9-20 for 29 points.  Should we blame the refs for that too?

I think it was an article on the Celticsblog facebook feed. Don't have it so can't back up with source but im 99% sure that's what I read... someone else has probably seen it too. I watched TNT footage and concluded that he brushed his elbow. Soft call but contact was there.

No, but we can blame one particular ref for this loss.

We can go substance all we want, sure, we wouldn't have been in that situation if we played better,  but we didn't and we were. But the fact still remains that we should have won by 1 point if not for that bogus call.

That is on that ref.
