Celtics are #5 on the list.

 #4 Bulls 2.5 Billion
 #3 Warriors 2.6 Billion
 #2 Lakers 3 Billion
 #1 Knicks 3.3 Billion

1 billion equals 1000 million. So the Celtics are worth 2200 Million dollars. I say we can pay the little guy.

Also what was the purchase price for the Celtics when Wyc and coPany bought the team.

Edit: 360 million dollars in 2002.  This is why it's laughable when reports come out by Forbes that the Cavs lost 40 million last year.

The Celtics value has appreciated 1.9 Billion
In 15 years. That's a disgusting profit. Can't stand when the richest men on earth try and pretend they are losing money.

I'm interested in how they calculate the worth of a franchise.

I'm interested in how they calculate the worth of a franchise.

I found this:

Although most sports franchises are privately held (versus publicly traded) concerns, they can be valued using generally accepted valuation methods. The most widely used method for determining sports franchise value is the guideline transaction method. The valuation process entails an analysis of the relationship between the price paid for a franchise and a relevant measure of team performance, typically revenue. This relationship between price and performance is evidenced in an implied valuation multiple, which is the ratio of price to revenue (or some other performance measure, such as earnings or cash flow). The selection of appropriate valuation multiples is a function of the specific facts and circumstances extant at the valuation date.

Don't think LeBron doesn't know this.  When he wants someone to be signed or traded for, regardless of luxury tax, this is why.

Not that I like to reserect the old posts, BUT:

This League in a few years will be the NHL of a few years ago.. Lockout for a year.
Until the disparity in Contracts is identified with marginal players making 10 plus mill, Above average players 15 + and Stars over 20 not to mention Superstars uniting to form super teams, College players leaving 2 years to early, the game officiated the way it is and if Cleveland lost 40 mill what did the Pelicans or Magic lose?

The NBA is a good game when two good teams are competing. But, there are only a few elite teams. In most cases outside of the Playoffs, regular season games are hard to watch..

The lockout is coming

What? This is utterly nonsensical. The NBA and NBPA signed a new CBA about a week ago. There literally cannot possibly be a lockout for nearly a decade.

At the current rate this League will not survive another Ten. MLB had a deal done and still were trying to eliminate the Twins and Rays several years later...

The game as constituted sucks. If Cleveland is correct in losing big smoke, how do you think they are doing in smaller markets where the Teams suck..

Owners can pull the plug anytime. Its coming...

I think they're all making money, with the exception of some teams that are trying to compete (The Cavs, Clippers, OKC from last year) and are paying a lot of luxury tax. They'll be (more than) fine
I'm bitter.

For some perspective:

In 2011, the Knicks led Forbes' NBA valuations at $655 million.

That would rank last in the league today.

The Clippers sale a few years back helped to reset all the other teams values.
Celtics fan for life.

The television rights deal helps big time too.  Both national & local rights deals.
