Not meant to be a slight, but Kelly is not the most assertive player. He's not the type to typically impose his will on a game which leads to him failing to live up to his capability at times.
What he is however, is a cerebral, talented and -despite looking clumsy and off balanced at times- coordinated 7 footer. Many teams across the league could use Kelly as an immediate upgrade to their starting lineup and he's a luxury to have for us to plug and play depending on the roles required on any given night.
Like Horford, Kelly is a complimentary piece, ideal to space the floor and play off the talented scoring guards on the roster. Unlike Horford however, I'd argue that Kelly has a more natural offensive player. Where Horford finds his way opportunistically finding buckets in the offense, Kelly is actually a player IMO that can decide how he'll score before each possession and execute regardless of how tightly he's being defended.
He has a quick repeatable stroke and a high release point on his jumper. He has an array of post moves and counter moves that he can use to punish strong defensive front courts like Memphis and Utah. He also has a developed court vision and is capable high quality in rhythm looks for his teammates. Kelly's got all of the skills why then is he not a perennial all star? The answer of course harkens back to his assertiveness. You can never have enough of Kelly Olynyk's production.
I just get the impression that Kelly is a team player. He want's to be the guy who keeps the engine running smoothly rather than it's driving force. Kelly's never going to insert all he can give in to the game plan so therefor it's up to guys like Isaiah to draw it out of him. That might mean passing up some shots at times to get the big fella going, knowing full well that the increased engagement and attention from defenders will benefit IT in the long run.
Now I've been wrong about Kelly before but I agree with Rollie on this. Somewhere between Kelly finding his game and the rest of the team learning when to defer to him, KO's emerging as a minor force. What that will mean come contract time is anyone's guess but IMO Kelly looks like he might finally be ready to take that next step. Here's hoping that this is new normal for him and not just another flash of brilliance.
