No team would pay that for Butler. Of course we shouldn't trade both BRK picks plus two of Bradley / Crowder / Smart.

Seriously, I don't think there's been a GM in league history dumb enough to give up that for Butler.  Maybe the two Nets picks OR one pick and one of those players OR two of those players, but all of it together?

While I'd hate the trade, I think 2017+Smart gets the deal done. By giving up Butler, Bulls go back to rebuild. Wade is surely leaving in the summer. So the 2017 pick plus Marcus Smart get to develop on the same timeline.

Ideally though, I'd give up 2018 + Bradley. Bradley is brilliant right now but Smart impacts winning through unorthodox ways. I'd love if Smart could stay a Celtic for a long time.

It's in #12 on this list, and there are a ton of other predictions of trades/non-trades for other teams (ex. Ibaka to Toronto, Nurkic staying put, Brook Lopez staying put, Carmelo joining the Clippers, etc.).

But they argue that, and I quote:

Quote
But the probable cost—both this year and next year's Brooklyn Nets' picks, plus two of Jae Crowder, Avery Bradley and Marcus Smart—is far too steep.

By forfeiting those assets, the Celtics marginally improve but still fall short against the Cavaliers. They'd also surrender this summer's cap space and, quite possibly, a new franchise player.

If they make this trade and Butler, Isaiah Thomas and Al Horford aren't good enough to beat Cleveland, let alone whoever emerges from the Western Conference, what options does Boston then have to improve and win it all?

This is pretty much what I've been saying around here, but some people think my logic is completely flawed.

I would be perfectly fine with trade talks for PG13 or Butler around Draft Day, but now I think the prices are astronomically high and won't help us beat Cleveland still (maybe it gets us to the ECF, but even that's an "if" - have to get past Toronto who could possibly add Ibaka).

Maybe this can turn into the situation with the Red Sox (I know, I know, different sports), where they spent years hoping for Sale but the price was astronomically high, but then the White Sox lowered their price as they realized they needed to rebuild and the RS pounced. Maybe this summer, the Bulls FO realizes that?

EDIT: Sorry I think this wasn't the thread to post it under. Move it if necessary Mods. Thanks!

I mean, the guy is right, but has anyone really advocated trading the entire war chest for Butler? Those sorts of demands are the exact reason Ainge last walked away from a Butler deal. I think just about every proposed Butler trade around here has focused on, at most, the '17 pick + Avery and other less-than-premium assets (non-Nets picks, maybe Smart, Olynyk, etc), leaving the '18 pick and Jaylen Brown for a follow-up trade for another all-star that could put Boston into contention.

To be honest, I think Ainge values Smart more highly than Bradley at the moment.

I also think Smart is virtually untouchable unless a trade for PG13 or AD popped up, but Ainge really loves Marcus and we all do too. He "impacts winning" and while he may not fill the stat sheet every night, he plays with passion and intensity that not many others around the league do.

Smart is the Cs Artest.

Every team needs an Artest type player. Not personality, but player.

I wanted Bulter during the draft and was fine with #3,AB,Amir,Crowder for him. But now with his locker room antiques and following Wades lead and Rondo sounding like the reasonable teammate on the Bulls, I've pumped the breaks a bit.

Browns played well, not consistent, but has gotten better the last month. I want to see where he will go. I really like him at the 2 guard next to IT, gives some length to the back court. And I think Crowder has to stay along with Smart if Butler comes in for defense and leadership. It would kinda defeat the purpose of what BS wants to do. What the Bulls wanted was crazy. I think Anthony Davis would be the only player I'd do that with. But the more time that goes one, the less want I have for Butler. Especially if you can get a wing like Jackson to pair with Brown for the future the 2017 pick may be worth more to the C's than a trade. It will take longer to get to the top again, but we could be there longer.

Quoting the journalistic disaster that is BP doesn't carry any water here.

And I'm enjoying immensely the abject fear that exists of upgrading this fatally flawed roster.

We can call BR what we want but Michael Pina is not a journalistic disaster. The guy's been a good Celtics beat reporter. C'mon man..

Butler is a really good player, but I don't think he's the missing piece, or some have to have him difference maker you trade all your assets for.  I saw someone post before that they weren't sure they would trade this years Nets pick for him, and at times, I sort of agree.  Obviously I know the Butler isn't coming here, if he comes here, for nothing short of a kings randsom.  I'm a realist.  The point is, does Butler warrant an overpay?  I'm not so sure.

Just posted a Sixers / Bulls / Cs deal that's far more realistic than their suggestion.

Nice idea, but a mid to late first or two would HAVE to go to Chicago (likely from us, see the Memphis and/or Clipper pick(s)) and a second rounder would be likely due to Philly.

I agree with you additional picks may be required from Boston. Example: the Cs might need to trade both of their 1sts next year, along with that Minny pick this year, to get it done.

I don't think PHI can hope for a better return than Rozier for Okafor he'd be a nice get for them.
