This can't be good...
The Lakers already have 3 people (Kupchak and Bussx2) in different roles all making calls.
Now comes Magic as an adviser and says he wants to "call the shots".

This can't be good.
We are going to have a new drama rivalry Knicks vs Lakers.

I cant wait....

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Just because guys were good players does not make them good coaches, analysts, advisers, etc. This seems more like a PR role than anything else. I doubt he will call any of the final shots unless he proves to be incredibly savvy in management.

Most of the rumors coming out of LA is that he'll be taking a lot of Jim Buss' authority.

EDIT:  That said, it should be noted that Magic has displayed some business acumen through his post-basketball career, so perhaps he proves capable.  My guess is that there's a learning curve, conveniently at a time when the team wants to be more competitive.

I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

  • That's turrible
Lakers can have their fun with their former superstars playing roles they may or may not be good at. We'll keep building that contender.

So the Lakers tout Magic Johnson as a consultant.

Consultants are usually valued experts that are 'consulted' to provide expert solutions for problems.

In his first interview since being touted as a consultant for the Lakers sinking ship Magic Johnson does his not unusual power grab by implying that he wants to be the last word when it comes to decision, then he admits that he is not really up on the CAB, Salary-Cap, or what it takes to run an NBA franchise. In this interview he throws around some words that could be thrown around by any regular member of Celticsblog, but because he is Magic Johnson he will probably get paid handsomely for not knowing much. The Lakers are so screwed.

  • A true Celtic plays with heart.
The Lakers are in better hands aided by Magic Johnson.

It's based on your perspective, quite simply
We're the same and we're not; know what I'm saying? Listen
Son, I ain't better than you, I just think different

Magic Johnson will help the Lakers by ANY involvement, alone.

He, Kobe, Shaq and Kareem still have that kind of pull - I'd like to believe - that can lure a potential FA or at least get one to think about the Lakers.

Imagine THOSE four sitting in a room talking to you.

The man still earns a ton of respect from me for his relationship with Larry AND their battles in the 80's, alone.

He is Laker Tradition - the originator of "Showtime."

I still haven't forgiven him for that Hookshot in 1987 but it's all good.

I disagree with this.  Have free agents been swarming to play for Michael Jordan in Charlotte, Larry in Indiana, or Shaq in Sacramento?

Magic has about as much pull with free agents as the C's 17 banners do (which is very, very little).  Besides the guys who grew up watching and idolizing Magic are all out of the league now or on their way out (Pierce, Carter, Terry, etc.).

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

I think BOS fans have been spoiled, to be honest.

We've sat here for last couple of years swooning over our draft picks, our coach, our future, our team, and our increasing success.

Most of you NorthEasters are NOW swooning over NE's Superbowl.

With that being said, I wouldn't count Magic or the Lakers out. It "IS" LA - beautiful weather year round, nice people, a fanbase just as dedicated as ours.

Just like Tom Brady had a hand in trying to (and almost succeeding) in getting KD here I certainly wouldn't count Magic out.

And Magic would probably stand a better shot at actually suiting up for LA than Tom Brady would for the Celtics..........

No - the Lakers - as currently constructed - wouldn't be a great FA draw. But they do have DeAngelo Russell, JR seems to be coming along, Ingram has potential AND they also have a very good young coach in Walton and AGAIN - it's LA...

I wouldn't count them out, TBH. Oftentimes all it takes is ONE player to make that move then others will follow.

And about BOS' banners? I believe any Basketball player worth their salt HAS to respect our banners. There is no way NOT to. It speaks to the tradition of the team.

He might be good at picking out talent which was the strength of Isiah Thomas. But don't think he can handle being GM.
