Hidden within this really good piece on Smart, the Celtics have had preliminary trade discussions about several big men around the league

Before the postseason, the Celtics hope for the continued development of Smart, who’s averaging 10 points and 4.7 assists, and will pursue the acquisition of a center. They worked out former Milwaukee Buck Larry Sanders last month and have had preliminary discussions about several big men on the trade market, sources told The Vertical.

It doesn't specify who, but you have to think the common names of Ibaka, Milsap, Noel, Nurkic, Bogut, etc. have been the ones they've been talking about.

Hopefully this means we can expect this type of trade before the deadline if nothing bigger materializes, such as a Butler, George, or Boogie trade, and Danny is basically weighing his options at the moment waiting for the best deal. Would still love someone like Ibaka on the C's, who should come cheaply and would fit well on our team. I never really considered him on the C's beforehand, because who knew he'd actually come available at the deadline with the Magic trading so much to get him?
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

all this tells me is that Danny is trying to get a big on the cheap, so that he can keep building through the draft. Good job Danny.

Nah, the Celtics have been stingy. Can't see Ainge pulling the trigger unless it's for a star.

I initially read this as "preliminary talks for SEVERAL BIG TRADES."

And then the first name I see is Larry Sanders. You can imagine my confusion.

Why do I get this funny feeling that the trades Danny has been having discussions on are actually not for the common names being tossed about. Danny's teades tend to come out of nowhere and not involve leaked names.

Eh, at this point someone has said "sources" about virtually every big on an expiring as well as many that aren't.  There are only so many options out there -- it's not that hard to throw blindly at a dart board and still get a name or two correct.  It's pretty unlikely Ainge hasn't made or received any calls.

I could see Danny trading for a more under-the-radar type like Jeff Withey or Richaun Holmes.
Isaiah, you were lightning in a bottle.

So basically a Mikki Moore type trade?

Is Jeff Withey still playing? I remember when a lot of people wanted to draft him.

Withey's an advanced metrics darling who's never really gotten steady minutes. I haven't watched him play enough to understand why.

This year it could just be a numbers game, Withey's competing for minutes with Favors, Gobert, Diaw and Lyles, and just Gobert accounts for 34mpg at the center slot. If the Jazz go small for the rest of those minutes, he's out of luck.

Isn't Withey just Zeller?

Exactly - Zeller. If he had any game they would find minutes for him. How many players that really have game ride the bench - anywhere?

Richaun Holmes doesn't move the needle much but he's only 23 I think?
