So I was thinking we want Memphis to make the 8th playoff seed, because they have a 1-11 protection on that first they owe us.  For this year, and 1-13 next year.....   Is that correct?

If they make the playoffs preferably as 8th seed, then we could have a top 20 pick this year.   Maybe that pick would be something we could trade along with our 2018 Bostons pick.

7th seed, 8th is probably out of reach

Denver owns Memphis' 2017 first rounder (protected 1-5), not the C's. The Celtics will likely get a pick from memphis in 2019, unless they slip hard in the next two years, which could happen. From RealGM:

Quote
Memphis' 1st round pick to Boston protected for selections 1-8 in 2019 (conveyable if Memphis conveys a 1st round pick to Denver in 2017) and 1-6 in 2020 (conveyable if Memphis has conveyed a 1st round pick to Denver by 2018) and unprotected in 2021

We wanted Memphis to make the playoffs last year.  If we'd acquired the pick next season it was top-12 protected, if memory serves correctly.  Top 8 protected will be adequate in 2019.

Let's take the unprotected option in 2021  ;)

This, I don't understand the OP, as we can't have Memphis' pick until 2019.

I agree.  TP.  The Celtics have 3 number one draft picks joining the team next year.  I think it's best to spread the draft picks out.

When we originally got the pick in 2015, was for 2017 or later with the following protections:

2017: 1-10
2018: 1-12
2019: 1-8
2020: 1-6
2021: no protection

Memphis owes another pick first, which was protected 1-5 and 15-30 in 2015 and 2016.  This year that pick us top 5 protected only.  Accordingly, if Memphis had barely missed the playoffs last year, as it looked like they might for awhile, we would have had the 2018 pick protected 1-12, which is a less good than the current situation.  The OP either remembered something about this and got confused, or read an old article from last year and didn't realize it.

Yes, as you say this is because they owe a 1st to Denver before, which will be conveyed apparently this year (it is top-5 protected). So we can't get their 2018, as they would be consecutive drafts trading their first round.

The earlier we can get Memphis pick is now 2019 (top-8 protected, then top-6 protected in 2020 and then unprotected in 2021).

I forgot about them owing Denver a pick..... And you can't trade consecutive 1st.  Makes sense now.   Thanks guys!   http://www.celticsblog.com/2016/8/22/12562936/boston-celtics-future-nba-draft-picks-brooklyn-nets-grizzlies-clippers

Like a good wine, this pick gets better with age.  Memphis seems like a team on the decline.  It is a good trade chip.  It is definitely looking like a potential lottery pick, likely top 10 pick or better sometime in the 2019-2021 time frame.  Similar in value to the 2017 NOP pick but less because of the uncertainty and delay.  Still a good chip though.
