Just a helpful trade primer for Celtics fans:
- 60% of all deals you'll hear about are entirely bullcrap made up by click bait trolls. These include any deals that have Danny trading major assets for aging stars (ex. Melo for Brooklyn picks). This will also include many past rumors like Jimmy Butler (though this could be a reality this time around). So do not get fooled about some moron blogging how 'Melo averaged 28 ppg 3 years ago so he's worth top consideration now. While the Cs might bring in Bogut or Tyson Chandler, it's going to be pennies on the dollar because neither guy puts the Cs over the top and both are too old to have that much value on a team that aren't favored to win the championship this year. Again, many of the rumors are clickbait. Don't bother with rumors unless it's by someone with a track record of breaking REAL news.
- 30% of all deals you'll hear about are being floated by other teams looking to drum up interest in getting other teams to make a play for their guys. Everyone knows Danny has the aces in the deck so everyone is going to use Boston to try to nudge up the value of their own guys in the press (ex. Okafor/Noel/Ibaka for Brooklyn picks). So consider this when trying to evaluate the real worth of a player on the open market. EVERYONE the Cs will be linked to will be overvalued.
- At maximum 10% of the deals will be viable, realistic trade deals. You probably won't hear about these until the last minute. Remember when Danny traded Rondo? Rumors swirled around for a solid year and Danny pulled that one when no one expected it (in mid-December). This will be the case again. If a deal gets made, don't expect hardcore details until the last minute. Danny is a gambler but he plays his cards close to the vest.
- Either Bradley or Crowder will remain a Celtic. Those are the best 3 point shooters on the team and both open up the floor for IT. I would not be surprised to see both remain. However, due to the lack of really good SGs and SFs this coming draft these guys have value that is quite high. Crowder in particular looks like an absolute steal with his contract, defense and .647 true shooting percentage. Don't look at him as an afterthought. He'd be the prime attraction in any deal that doesn't involve the BKN picks.
- Horford can't get moved because it would detract other FAs from ever signing in Boston. Don't even bother posting trade deals with him included. It's not happening.
- The value of the Brooklyn picks are exceptionally high. This years pick is almost guaranteed to be a top 4 pick. Next year's pick is likely to be a top 5. Both drafts are seen as excellent. Any team that wants to rebuild can sell tickets around a young, exciting top 5 stud from a deep draft. Bad teams are drooling to get two bites at the apple. Decent teams are drooling to get out of the middle of the pack. Danny's got steak to sell while many others are starving.
- Smart's value is rising but still low. Not because he's not an exceptional player but because the 2017 draft is LOADED with PGs. 4 or 5 of the top 10 could be PGs. Teams like Philly know they're going to be able to draft a talented PG even at 8 or 10. Smart has shown he can run an offense but I think he'll still end up a Celtic because he's more valuable to this team than to many others.
Take these points into consideration when evaluating deals. It'll reduce your stress quite a bit as rumors fly around the next couple of weeks.
PS - Still, ain't it nice? Massive valuable assets and we're sitting in 2nd in the ECF.
