I'm not moving Smart, Crowder, or any Brooklyn picks for Melo. But I think there's an outside chance we could get Melo for some combination of future Celtics first round picks, the Memphis first rounder, the Clips first rounder, 2nd rounders, Jerebko, and/or Yabusele plus Zeller and AJ. Of course we would also need to find a rebounding/defense oriented big to come off the bench. If we could pull that off, I think we could contend in the short term while also building for the future.
In my mind, that's the ideal situation at this point. It's not plan A, B, or C, but the ideal situations aren't happening. We didn't get Durant, the Kings aren't moving Cousins, and the Pacers and Bulls aren't giving away PG or Butler. We have too many young players which include Yab, Zizic, Nader, Minny's second rounder next yeat and all those other picks. We can't develop that many players. We need to consolidate.
I don't love Melo, but if we can make the best offer without giving up our best assets, I think it's the way to go. Melo was absolutely awesome on the Olympic teams when he had great players around him. If he's added to a 50 pace win team without taking much away, along with a great coach, a great clubhouse, and hard nose players, I think there's a real chance that could bring the best out of him.
We would not be favored to beat Cleveland, but we would have a chance and would not be trading away our future. And it's very unlikely we could add Hayward or Blake Griffin this summer any way. If the Knicks are willing to play ball now and accept a reasonable offer, I say let's do it.
