Carmelo is an awful fit. He's the forward version of a Big Al type center. This isn't the 90s, and you don't win games by watching him palm the ball, stare at the basket and jack two dozen contested fadeaway 18 footers.
Not to mention he's got a zero percent chance of looking in the mirror, realizing he's the 3rd best player on the C's and accepting that for the good of the team.
I like Melo the person, but he's an awful fit for you guys.
If, and that's a big if, Ainge were to trade for Melo it owuld only be after some serious face to face discussions that get to your point about where Melo views himself in the pecking order.
I still think at the end of the day Ainge just does not like that contract, and would prefer to have cap space this summer.
And quite frankly, I think Ainge chasing free agents this summer is the bigger mistake. None of the options out there are likely to choose Boston, because we can't offer any where near the same money. Players like Millsap and Ibaka are what Boston is looking at. I'd rather just pay Melo for two more years then pay either of them just as much money but for 4 years.
Our only other better option is suck it up and trade the Brooklyn pick(s). Problem is, that 2017 pick is only at its absolute most value if it actually becomes the #1 pick. Ditto for 2018. Maybe Ainge gets lucky and some GM panics, but I think other GM's are so leery of him now they aren't going into a deal blind.
Oh how I agree..
I would pay trade for Melo 10x over before I would dream of throwing a max contract at Paul Millsap - he's a terrible fit here who gives us nothing that we need.
When the Hawks played the Cavs last year Millsap tried to match up against Lebron - from what I recall, the result was a little embarrassing.
Carmelo probably wouldn't help this team a huge amount in the regular season, but I don't really care about that - we are already a very good regular season team. He's help us
tremendously in the playoffs, and that is something I
do care about.
Melo's ball hoggedness is overrated. He actually wasn't that bad when he was was playing on some more competitive (ie. playoff bound) Nuggets teams, it's just when he gets on bad teams that he goes the Kobe route - loses faith in his teammates (fair enough, as they suck) and tries to do everything himself.
In fact If you look at YouTube highlight videos of Melo from this season, almost every video features at least 2 or 3 pretty impressive assists. He's a very underrated passer and will give up the ball if he has competent help. He's hovered around the 3 APG range throughout his career and has actually averages a whisker over 1 assist per turnover for his career - which is actually pretty respectable for a guy who has ball as often as he does.
People just like to hate. You can't mention anybody on this forum without a handful of people "no way, I don't want him, he XYZ". Last offseason alone people were saying exactly that about Dwight, Horford (I was one of those, admittedly), Butler, Hayward...
Hell I'm sure if you brought up an Anthony Davis for Marcus Smart trade somebody would complain that they don't want to give up Smart.
