Would you trade Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, Tyler Zeller, and a Brooklyn 1st for Demarcus Cousins?

Yes
No
Maybe but only if I could tweak one of those assets

So here's the proposal, and it works on the trade machine:

Boston sends Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, Tyler Zeller, and a Brooklyn 1st round pick.
Sacramento sends Demarcus Cousins.

Trade works.
http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=z7urkd4

Now if you are in Danny Ainge's shoes, would you pull the trigger?

This is comparable to the Kevin Love trade as the Celtics would be sending 2 top 6 draftees plus a 1st round pick that could end up as high as #1 overall plus filler for Cousins.

Is this worth it?  If you say yes for the Celtics do you think Sacramento would say yes?

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I could understand if this deal went down, but would REALLY like to keep Marcus since I see his value increasing on a championship level team.

Even if you switch him out for say Rozier and the BOS '18 pick, they are still getting two top tier assets along with an athletic young guard and another 1st.

Is this trade for DMC fair? Absolutely

Would I do this trade though?
Nope.

If the Celtics are winning anything in this league, Marcus Smart will be a part of it.

He may not fill up the stat sheet, but he plays with a ton of passion and makes "winning plays" on the court (and tremendous defense/hustle). See the last part of the 4th quarter against Houston last night? That's why you keep him.

Also I have high hopes for Jaylen honestly.

I would be excited if the team traded for Cousins, but I'm torn on Marcus Smart's involvement in the deal.

DeMarcus Cousins has his problems, he'll yell at refs, teammates, coaches, reporters, etc.  At the least he'd be a concern for any locker room (despite him probably being a very charitable and likable guy away from the game).

But we all know Marcus Smart will yell at refs and coaches too, had gone into the stands after a fan, etc.

If the C's aquire Cousins, part of me thinks having passionate and outspoken guys like Smart and Crowder will help keep him in line.  Like if Cousins started yelling at Stevens during a film session, Smart and Crowder wouldn't hesitate to call him out on it.  They wouldn't be scared to stand up to Cousins like many of his teammates in Sacramento have been if Cousins gets out of line.

Of course on the flip side, that could all backfire, as having 2 passionate potential powder kegs like Cousins and Smart together could destroy the team.  You can find many successful teams with one wild child, but you rarely see successful teams with 2 or more.

You definitely need a strong locker room to get the most out of Cousins, and I personally think Marcus Smart adds to a strong locker room, but Smart also makes it more combustible too.

me too, when you talk about skills and pieces, i would absolutely trade Smart for Cousins 10/10 times, but I would avoid including Smart if I can

mainly for this reason

Cousins is a head case and is a tough in your face kind of guy...so is Smart
just the thought of Cousins and Smart being in your face is probably not something you want. I think it would further establish our identity as gritty, tough, and mean guys

IT/Smart/Crowder/Cousins isn't a team whom you want to p--- off in my opinion, that team is just very very mean.

It would make us a much better team this year, which is tempting, but I voted no.  Have to assume the pick will be number 1 when considering trades, and I don't want to trade
Fultz, Smart and Brown for Cousins.

If it's next year's Brooklyn pick I might have to say yes despite being a fanatic for Smart's game.
That's a close call, still probably no because what if the Nets are the worst team in the league next year....

Final: no.

You guys are too high on Marcus. He's a tough, glue guy that comes up with loose balls and is a great defender. But if the C's don't get a star then we'll be a 3rd place team who loses in the 2nd round every year.

But if your happy with watching that 3rd place team as long as it has Marcus Smart on it, then yeah I guess you don't trade for Cousins.

If I offered you a cheese pizza in exchange for your pepperoni, would you pass? Or would you take the cheese pizza and try to get pepperoni elsewhere?

Nah, we are being offered a cheese pizza for 10 dollars and some pepperoni. I would rather find an alternate form of payment to replace the pepperoni.

That way we can get the cheese pizza and put our pepperoni(which we really like) on it, instead of having to go to the store and try and buy some equally valuable, but less delicious pepperoni.

Since when is Smart a deal breaker ?
There are much better free agents hitting the market who can score and defend...

Make this deal all day long..

My issue wasn't with Smart being in it.  It was with Fultz, Smart, Brown.

The potential of the pick puts us in the driver's seat (aided by Cousin's temperament).  They would be  trading for a shot at Fultz.  If we give them that chance then we don't have to include both Smart and Brown too.  Yes we have to add something but not that...

Smart, Brown, and the Nets pick is steep, but if it's the 2018 pick, I think I'd pull the trigger.

You can replace Smart with the 2017 Nets pick or go after someone like Hayward if we have enough cap space.

No.  Cousins isn't a winning player.  Honestly, I feel like these Brooklyn picks are almost untouchable for any player that would be available.
