The Sacramento Kings will offer DeMarcus Cousins a contract extension this offseason using the Designated Player rule that will pay him in excess of $200 million.

The Kings were previously reluctant to move Cousins, who is currently scheduled to be a free agent in 2018. The NBA's new collective bargaining agreement made a trade involving Cousins even less likely due to the Kings' ability to pay him significantly more money than a rival team.

Sacramento remains in the playoff picture for the No. 8 seed in their first season in their new arena.

Cousins signed a four-year, $62 million max extension in 2013

He's foolish if he stays there, no matter how much money they throw at him. Terrible organization that will never put a good cast around him.

He's quoted recently saying he can see himself having his jersey retired in Sacramento for the Kings one day, so yeah, he must be considering staying there long term. They are doing better with Ty Lawson getting back to his former level and taking over the starting PG spot. If they manage to also trade for Milsap they may make the playoffs.

Totally surprising news. I assumed they would just let walk the only person keeping them from being the worst franchise in the history of sports

If they are not going to trade him for an exorbitant package of players and lottery picks, Sac has no other option but to try and keep Cousins around for as long as humanly possible.

Except they can offer him more money than anyone else under the new CBA. Anyway from a Basketball Insiders chat on Monday:

casey -do you think the magic can get DeMarcus Cousins in a trade ? and what backup sf can they get in a trade?

Steve Kyler: To answer the question directly – No.

To answer the question more broadly – you’d think magic fans would have learned their lesson about temperamental big men heading into free agency.

Cousins is way too toxic for what’s going on in Orlando. He’d get everyone involved fired when he walks away in a year.

The next part is the Kings feel like they can sign him this summer to a Designated Veteran Extension. It will cost him about $50 million in guaranteed money if he gets traded now. He is saying all the right things to make sure that does not happen.

The funny part is... There are actually a TON of Kings fans on Facebook and Sactown Royalty who HATE the news. I don't blame them. It's not necessarily cousins but the fact that the organization is dysfunctional and they aren't getting anywhere with Cousins (mainly because they can't get a great cast around him).

Cousins would fetch a good amount of assets in a trade (some valuable ones too), but the FO is full of morons so...

The fans get it but the FO doesn't (they want to make the playoffs this season BADLY - even as an 8 seed to get swept by Golden State).

Also the Kings are literally in the EXACT situation as last season (15-21, fighting for 8 seed). No progress lol.

Things change quickly in the NBA. They have an insanely difficult schedule up to the All-Star Break, and Danny will be open to more negotiations the closer it gets to the deadline. They could legitimately not win a game on their current 7 game home stand before a tough road trip, so things could change really quickly, especially with the Nets pick increasing in value every day.

This isn't really news at all.

EDIT: I'm starting to think Danny has been really, really stingy with the Brooklyn picks up to this point. From what I've been reading, it seems like he's not been including that pick in any discussions for stars, which obviously will kill any trade possibilities. If Lowe is right and Chicago is really looking to try and get only Smart, Crowder, and the 2017 Brooklyn pick swap from us for Butler, then that has me thinking that Danny has been overly stingy in his trade offers (go figure), because I think I take that deal pretty easily to keep both Jaylen and the 2018 pick, which is coming from one of the biggest Smart fans on this blog. I'm guessing he gets a little more relaxed and realistic with his trade offers near the deadline, which could indicate actual movement.

Oh, I know they can offer him by far the most money, but that's sort of my point: If, after all the (justifiable) complaining he's done about the Kings organization, about not having enough talent around him, and about people "making f***ing excuses," he basically says, "Ah, heck with it, I'll stay with this crappy organization for an extra $50M I don't really need," then he belongs with that crappy organization.

If, on the other hand, he wants a real shot at winning, and wants to be a part of something special—while still making plenty of money—then I'd love for Boston to have him.

At this point, though, I don't trust anything the Kings say, because they're going to try to put a good face on the situation, even if it's not going well.

He's not stupid. He's going to be on his best behavior and say all the right things until he signs that 200+ million deal, THEN he will act up and demand a trade. That's how you do it.

Precisely. Kings management is terrible, having shown no ability to surround Cousins with real support. Putting all their eggs into squeaking into the playoffs, possibly with a losing record, in the tougher conference, is so short-sighted. As incompetent as Kings management is, they'd be better off unloading Cousins for a batch of picks and inexpensive youngsters, out of which they might get several solid players (and better team results) over the next 5+ years.

But it's the Kings, so they probably WILL give Cousins a huge contract, then continue to surround him with middling talent, and continue the same dismal process.

I agree. Cousins and Kings management will say all the right things, all the while knowing in their hearts that this road will lead to continued disaster. They could save everyone a lot of grief by just trading him.

Foolish in your eyes.  Maybe he likes living there.  Maybe he doesn't want to leave.

Wow!  The eighth seed!  What an ambitious goal.  Maybe, someday, they'll even shoot for a .500 record.  That will likely never happen, but Vivek and Divac can dream about it.

That franchise is such a mess.

Their FO is terrible.  So what logic is there in trading away their star player for more assets that their FO is just going to screw up?   They'd be in a perennial tank situation with no plan and little hope to get out of it.  Now if you tell me their plan is to sack their FO, hire Hinkie and go into a total multiyear tank rebuild that would be a different story.
