The Kings are currently tied for the 10th worst record in the league and are tied for the 8th seed in the West. If they keep Cousins in hopes of achieving their dream of getting swept by the Warriors in the first round of the playoffs, they are just fools. They owe their first round pick to the Bulls if it falls outside the top ten which is very likely. If their pick is in the top ten, they keep that pick and give up a second rounder. So it's not as if their picks falls a few spots, it falls from a top ten pick to a second rounder if they finish with the 11th worst record instead of the tenth or earn the honor of getting blown out by the Warriors in two home playoff games. A lot of people here were frustrated the Celtics made the playoffs a few years ago causing our pick to drop several spots. In this case it will drop thirty spots on a team that lacks young talent and should be rebuilding. By nearly all accounts, this is an excellent draft coming up and they're likely going to cost themselves a good young player.
The Kings roster is old. All their contributors other than Cousins are getting old and are mediocre players. The few guys they have under 25 have not shown any promise and aren't even earning playing time. If they trade Cousins, they will likely end up with a top 5 or 6 pick. Many people are suggesting the Celtics trade Rozier, Brown, the Brooklyn first, and another first. If the Kings take that deal, they will most likely end up with one of the prized point guards in Fultz, Ball, or Dennis Smith and one of the top wings in Tatum, Jackson, or Isaac. That's a darn strong start to a rebuild.
Fultz/Ball/Smith
Tatum/Jackson/Isaac
Jaylen Brown
Rozier
A future first or maybe Yabusele
All that for Cousins who they aren't winning with and they may lose for nothing in a year and a half. The Kings would be absolutely moronic to pass this up, but of course that is their M.O.
