Did anyone actually read the article ? I've never really cared about Hinkie. Philly decided to tank and Hinkie made it happen. I have always agreed tanking was a sound strategy. The team hadn't won 50 games in 30 years... it was their only realisitc route to a superstar. I was supportive of that. And it actually probably worked for them. It might have worked more than once. As a result of those efforts, the fan excitement there is the highest it's been in over a decade. I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the playoffs as soon as next year.
Hinkie himself was less interesting. The team itself signed off on the plan. He was just the one making it happen. He certainly wasn't the first to orchestrate a tank. He deserved credit for some of his asset acquisition trades but there he was using methods that guys like Ainge and presti also mastered (Hinkie speaks fondly of Ainge in this). My stance was always that the owners deserved credit for letting a shameless tank carry over for three seasons. Bravo to them for having patience. Hinkie likely wouldn't have had the same leeway elsewhere.
I admired the audacity of the plan but saw the owners responsible for the plan. Hinkie executed it effectively. When the backlash got loud, they used Hinkie as a scapegoat, but continued tanking. That was my take on it.
I really only started joking about loving Hinkie after some ignorant trolls here started accusing me of being in love with him. I didn't really know anything about him. I credited philly with the drive to land superstars via the draft.
I read this entire article, though. It definitely changed my perception of him. Curious if any of the Hinkie haters read this and changed any of their opinions of him.
I honestly went into this article thinking, "eh anyone who has played franchise mode in a basketball videogame could have executed that plan and potentially lucked into three straight star prospects like Hinkie did. I doubt he will ever work in the league again". I came away from the article thinking, "Hinkie actually seems like a fairly brilliant, innovative, and dedicated leader. Communication was his bigggest problem. He will likely get offers when his noncompete ends. If tanking doesn't make sense at his next destination, he will find some other strategy." I see Danny Ainge as the best GM in the league. Ainge gets it. I came away from this article believing Hinkie gets it as well.
