Biggest revelation was that he has a noncompete for a year.  He will most likely get offers to run another team after the success he had in Philly.  Apparently he has a lot of fans throughout the league.

Seems like a pretentious blowhard that has trouble separating theory from practice.

And yet the article is entirely right in that two years from now the narrative surrounding Hinkie can completely change.   Joel Embiid already looks transcendent.  Ben Simmons might even be better.  The plan may indeed have worked.  Philly fans already consider Hinkie a hero.  They trust the process.

Only gave the article a quick look over.

My biggest gripe with the whole "process" is how it was handled by the league. In any competitive situation the competitors are doing themselves and their fan base a disservice if they do not push the rules to the limit of their intent in order to gain an edge. Its the league and the commissioner's job to create rules that create the intended league.  Hinkie simply took a flawed draft and FA system to its limits. Rather then fixing the flaws (IE tanking and Free agents Stars abandoning teams) the league simply drove him out. The problems are still there just now the "trouble maker is gone". With Hinkie gone we will go back to our old fashion end of the season sit your star player out with mystery injuries style tanking. We will also watch young intriguing teams like the Bucks and in a few years the 76ers get blown up by Free agency so all stars can play with there friends. No one will bat an eye but the problems are still there. The league is making a ton of money and they don't want to rock the boat.

The system needs to be fixed. The lottery needs to disallow repeat bottom feeders and take further incentive out of tanking. Free agency needs to be fixed by creating major financial incentive for star players to stay with their teams. I have posted about it before but creating cap loop holes where only a percentage of a players contract is reflected on the cap based on tenure with one team could do this. IE 6 years with one team your cap number only is 75% against the cap, 10 years 50%, 12 years 25%. If A players is in his 6th season with the same team and makes 10mill then the cap hit is only 7.5mill but if traded he costs the new team the full 10mill. This would give teams a big incentive to develop and keep their stars creating a league of teams developed not purchased. This also allows past prime super stars to make big money without hurting their teams. The max salary should also be based on a percentage of the cap to avoid this past off season where starters where receiving the same contracts as super stars because the new cap dictate the rise in the market.

Yes, there was a mass migration there, worthy of lemmings. ;D
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Now I never know if we're talking about "The Process" or "The Process". Shouldn't Joel Embiid be "The Result"?

Now why would I read an article about a GM that presided over one of the worst stretches of basketball ever, in the history of the NBA?

Hinkie should never work in the NBA ever again. He ought to be forced to walk the earth barefoot for the remainder of his life, never stopping to rest. He should be ashamed of himself.

So the article is saying that Hinkie created The Process, after which, he went through Der Prozeß?

I know this is a joke, but winning the NBA is hard. Really hard. The clippers, memphis, and OKC have had seriously good teams for years now, and they barely sniff a championship.

Philly will be lucky to win a championship even if Simmons and Embiid turn out to both be superstars. The point is they at least have a chance now. I don't care how great Giannis will get, Milwaukee is simply not a chance of winning a championship unless they acquire at least 1 maybe two more superstars.

Note: I would love to see the Bucks or Minny or Portland or even Toronto win it all. But I hate Philly. Just how it goes.

Did anyone actually read the article ?   I've never really cared about Hinkie.  Philly decided to tank and Hinkie made it happen.  I have always agreed tanking was a sound strategy. The team hadn't won 50 games in 30 years... it was their only realisitc route to a superstar.  I was supportive of that.  And it actually probably worked for them.   It might have worked more than once.  As a result of those efforts, the fan excitement there is the highest it's been in over a decade.  I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the playoffs as soon as next year.

Hinkie himself was less interesting.  The team itself signed off on the plan. He was just the one making it happen.  He certainly wasn't the first to orchestrate a tank.  He deserved credit for some of his asset acquisition trades but there he was using methods that guys like Ainge and presti also mastered (Hinkie speaks fondly of Ainge in this).   My stance was always that the owners deserved credit for letting a shameless tank carry over for three seasons.  Bravo to them for having patience.  Hinkie likely wouldn't have had the same leeway elsewhere.

I admired the audacity of the plan but saw the owners responsible for the plan. Hinkie executed it effectively.   When the backlash got loud, they used Hinkie as a scapegoat, but continued tanking.  That was my take on it.

I really only started joking about loving Hinkie after some ignorant trolls here started accusing me of being in love with him.   I didn't really know anything about him.  I credited philly with the drive to land superstars via the draft.

I read this entire article, though.  It definitely changed my perception of him.   Curious if any of the Hinkie haters read this and changed any of their opinions of him.

I honestly went into this article thinking, "eh anyone who has played franchise mode in a basketball videogame could have executed that plan and potentially lucked into three straight star prospects like Hinkie did. I doubt he will ever work in the league again".   I came away from the article thinking, "Hinkie actually seems like a fairly brilliant, innovative, and dedicated leader.  Communication was his bigggest problem.  He will likely get offers when his noncompete ends.  If tanking doesn't make sense at his next destination, he will find some other strategy."   I see Danny Ainge as the best GM in the league.  Ainge gets it.  I came away from this article believing Hinkie gets it as well.
