is it ever? and if so, why isnt it when smart argues?
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

why should he stop?

Arguing with the refs is part of the NBA. Why should Smart stop? As long as the NBA tolerates players working the refs by seeking explanation for calls or sometimes arguing their case our players should not shy away from this aspect of the game but embrace it and master it. It is the NBA that should set guidelines for player appeal of calls by officials. As long as the NBA decides to be silent on this, the discretion of the referees will reign supreme.

the officials need to be more partial. gasol threw a tantrum and they called nothing, Smart seemed calm and collected and they were all over 'em...

complaining about officials being impartial is viewed as "fans being fans" and "fans don't see everything going on out there". which may be true maybe not, so why don't they do the officiating from the fans pov? and take them off the court and officiate the game from the same screen we see it?

Marcus is emulating what he see's in the NBA, most of the players do it.

Its up to the NBA to direct our marginally talented refs to issue T's when they tier of it.

Smart needs to argue with the officials more than other players, because he's so much more physical than most players.  He wants to make sure the officials see the opponent pushing him off when he puts his body into people.

I also like how he jumps backwards with his hands in the air to show the refs he's been fouled, as opposed to just flopping to the ground like most other players have been doing the past ~15 years.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

No. He is building reputation now. He needs to argue more intensely less often. Know when he is right, and force refs to watch his defense with an eye conditioned by previous complaints. Complaining excessively gets you nowhere.

Larry Bird handled the refs the best, he complained some, but mostly he just looked disgusted.
When you argue too much, you don't get the calls.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
He argues less than guys like Jae or IT.

Marc Davis is an absolute dog and should be investigated for dodgy Celtics officiating. He's hated us forever. Rondo and Doc didnt help our cause but he's  a POS.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Regarding the, "Complaining excessively gets you nowhere," and "When you argue too much, you don't get the calls," comments:

Have you ever watched LeBron play?

Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul, Tim Duncan, Cousins, Griffin, etc.

There's just as many guys who excessively complain, as there is those who don't.  There's no correlation between them getting less FTs.

It's hard to say Smart is arguing too "aggressively" or "intensely" when we can't see what he's saying and we don't always see exactly what happened.

If he's arguing more than other players, it's much more reasonable to assume the refs are missing more of his calls, than it is to assume his complaints are excessive/unwarranted.

If he really is arguing too intensely, we're a lot more likely to see more techs than we are to see him get less calls (and he already only gets like 1 FTA per game).

I think instead of asking Smart to change himself and the way he's always played basketball, we should just wait until his time/effort in the league pays off and he starts getting calls.

Flopping endears him to the refs less than arguing folks.   He has a reputation for flopping.   Everyone argues calls and yet not everyone flops.

Smart is not Lebron. Lebron is the NBA's baby Jesus.
Smart loses his poise. That hurts with the refs and his play.

NBA players, in general, are crybabies and I'd love to see them argue less.

That said, I remember a story from Heinsohn's book (if I'm remembering correctly) about one time when the players asked Red to stop arguing with the refs so much because they thought it was turning the refs against them. So for one game, ref didn't argue any calls and, according to Heinsohn, they got killed by the refs that game.

The point of the story was basically that as annoying as it is, it's useful. You have to advocate your position.

He'll tone down the emotion in time. He's 22.  Maybe he'll still be an emotional player as he gets older, but I think as he'll be less likely to let it get the better of him.
