I think Ainge did a masterful job this offseason making smart decisions.

PG-Isaiah is the guy here.  Rozier is coming on and should be a backup. All our guards can play multiple positions. Smart will also factor in here. Jackson will probably learn this year and go back and forth between the d-league but might find some spot minutes.

SG-Bradley is a very solid sg and continues to improve each year.  The starting gig is really his on lock.  Smart will play quite a bit here as well.  Hunter will also figure in and may spend time up and down to a lesser extent than  Jackson.  All these guys can really shift around as well. They can even move to sf at times if we really want to go small.

SF-Crowder is the vet here and solid all around. He really typlifies what this team is about much like Bradley or Smart or Isiaiah or whoever.  Brown is the rookie with talent here.  Green is also going to figure in and can really shoot it.  He's a player that has really started to come into his own as well. We can go small here too and shift to pf especially with Jerebko and his swiss army knife sort of play

PF-Amir will probably get the start here. Another hard worker and solid vet and professional. Good defense and pick and roll game to go with Isaiah.  Good team guy who sets picks and does the little things.  KO is more offensively geared and can really range out.  He's coming into his own as well.   Jerebko is the swiss army knife. Plus  Mickey can figure in here.

C-Horford is really going to change this team.  Really well rounded center and offensive player who can do so many things within the team.  He's the next best thing to Duncan in the league imo on the offensive end.  His D and presence will also help.  Zeller is a nice backup although may find himself as the 5th big after KO but gives us some sizeand offense  to go with some smaller more defensive guys like Jerebko and Mickey.

Stashed - Yabusele and Zizic. These guys really give us options with players like Zeller and Jerebko and even Mickey or KO going forward.  And Amir.   Nader is also stashed in Maine and gives us options with Jerebko and Green going forward too. They are going to make an impact ultimately.

Possible cuts - Young and Bentil.  Two guys that i hope still make the developmental club and don't get signed.  Young provides shooting to Hunters more well rounded game and competition.   Bentil is a nice guy to give some competition and depth behind Yabusele.

Losses - Sullinger and Turner. These were the most logical dumps imo.  Good players but limited and we got more athletic and younger with giving guys like Smart, Rozier, Brown, Hunter,  Yab, Mickey etc a shot and signing Horford is big here. Green gives us more range to go with KO and Isaiah and Bradley and just more well rounded team.

I think overall we fit the celtics way of doing things and have  a lot of different pieces who are all hard workers and coming into their own or have solidified themselves, but some really good  young talent, plus more draft picks coming up.  Ainge made the right picks for the future with Brown and Yab and Zizic, Jackson bentil and holding off trades.  We just continue to get better and are really building this.  Ultimately we are going to unleash our awesomeness on the rest of the league.

Getting guys to play defense and together is really Stevens challenge this year.  I don't think it will be a problem though.  He understands players strengths and weaknesses.  Guys like KO, Rozier and Green to go with guys like Brown and bradley and Smart, continue to get better in this area where I think Turner and Sully were getting pretty stagnant.  There will be a lot of competition where players really challenge themselves this way, and  I think we have an excellent mix of versatile players with youth and age.  Our rotation will probably fluctuate depending on injuries and who is playing well.  Guys like Brown and Smart may really make a dent in our lineup.  We have a pretty straight forward 1st, 2nd and 3rd team where players will fit in as that goes though whether we go small or big etc..

Starters

Isaiah
Bradley
Crowder
Amir
Horford

2nd team

Rozier
Smart
Brown
KO
Zeller

3rd team

Jackson
Hunter
Green
Jerebko
Mickey

I expect Green, Jerebko to be the first guys to go to with that 3rd unit and play quite a bit.  Especially as Brown develops although he may get some starts pretty quick.   We can have a 10 man rotation while going deeper than that.  We are really 15 deep and then some. 12 as far as active roster players with Green and Jerebko.  I think Jackson, Hunter and Mickey are still d-league eligible. Even Brown could spend some time there but I doubt it.  I feel like Green is going to make an impact as well as Horford.

I am super excited for this team this year.  I wouldn't mess with it too much unless something really good comes along and even then I'd be hesitant..   It's more about building this and making the right moves to me.   I think we can challenge and possibly win it and shock the world.   We are loaded with talent and players like Brown are really going to help that cause.

I agree 100% with your overall positive outlook.

I think Turner and Sully leaving will be like the one time Rondo got hurt mid-season, I think that's what happened. We were left with no point guard, but somehow the players felt liberated and played even better just swinging the ball around more quickly.

That wasn't going to last, however, as you kind of need a pg.

Turner and Sully were pure Celtics, but they were sort of a burden on the other players in their own ways. Sully was getting too slow. Turner needed the ball too much to be effective on offense.

Turner could improve even more, but that wasn't going to be worth the money risk. Same with Sully. It comes down to risks.

Danny has stacked the team with some top picks (Smart, Brown and probably at least one more) and there will be continued salary cap room in the future.

I think losing Turner and Sully will be addition by subtraction.

There are only 15 slots and the salary cap can become an issue if we simply resign everybody decent. Humphries and Bass were good. Maybe they were too old to simply bring back even though they were solid. I guess that's where a treadmill comes into play if Danny remains loyal to the wrong guys.

I'm not worried about Zeller. He could have a career breakout or get traded. He takes care of himself and is definitely good enough to stay in the league indefinitely.

Yes, that's how I feel about the two losses. For all the good Sully and Turner bring to a team, they end up hogging space and becoming too noticeable as 50-50 players. You might win with them. You might lose with them. Turner might prove us wrong, but as good as he was the second half of last year, it was too risky to sign him for $17-18 million especially with Thomas, Bradley, Olynyk and other contracts eventually running out.  Zeller got $8 million. That's Avery Bradley money from before the salary cap exploded.

$8 million is peanuts in today's NBA. Maybe Zeller improves like Turner did under Stevens. Then we'll have a backup center for NBA chicken feed costs. But Zeller will have to bring it up a notch or two for that to happen. If he isn't traded, he will definitely be first in line for front court minutes if there are injuries or if for some reason we have to try him. We are trying to win games. He is well ahead of Mickey and bigger than Jerebko unless I missed something. Zeller will need to seize the day if and when he gets his chance.

Zeller represents how strong the roster is. He might not play at all. Once James Young is cut or traded, there will be no deadwood on the roster. I loved Phil Pressey, but I admit he is a treadmill while Rozier, Smart, and Jackson could have high pg ceilings or at least Rozier and Jackson do.

I bet if Turner didn't cost so much, he would have returned. But he did, so he's gone. I think Sully was gone no matter what. He needed to get into shape and didn't. Sully was holding us back, Turner not so much.

TP to the OP. Nice concise summary without over analysis or being too simplistic. I share the optimism and think beyond the playing strength we have the Stevens factor. I would still like to be one player deeper but Brown could prove to be that player. Otherwise the depth is good and there is the opportunity to attract someone mid season. I am not ready to make predictions but it won't surprise me, if we stay healthy, if this group 'overachieves' on expectations again.

Thanks.  Ainge basically managed to add like 7 guys.  Our 5 draft picks plus Green and Horford. He also managed to stash some guys and give picks from last  year a shot.   I agree there is a move or two to be made but it's more about finding the right fit.  I think we have really good vets that really aren't old and good talent throughout.  I don't think the trade we make will be what people think.  It might be in ways but Ainge is more particular about finding the right moves.  He doesn't trade just to make moves.

All we really subtracted was Sully and Turner, but they played big minutes last year and were ok to good but really weren't so productive.  That gives guys time plus roles from last year.  Horford will really eat one of those guys minutes but that's still 30 minutes to give to other players like Brown and Green and even Rozier.  Isaiah, Smart, Bradley, Crowder I dont' see a huge change there but injuries happen.  Amir's minutes will probably fluctuate more this year.  jerebko, Zeller may dip as well and they might ultimately be replaced by guys we have stashed.  They are nice depth though and can do different things.

A move can be made.  I just think it's about finding the right one though. Ainge is particular there I think.

We got younger with more options and older too with more talent as well.  We are a much better team and a logical step or two ahead of last year.  We've gotten better each year and I don't think this will be any different.  This team really fits together when  you look at it that way.

I'd say JJ is on the 2nd team over Zeller, who largely didn't play last year after losing the starting spot. He's more defensively versatile, and he spaces the floor better, which is critical to give Rozier, Smart, and Brown more open lanes to drive in with their questionable outside shooting.

Rozier, Smart, Brown, JJ, and KO is about as strong of a second unit as one can wish for. Defensively they're not going to give up any ground, and they're built to force turnovers and run. It's a great starting environment for Brown to be effectively utilized in.

EDIT: And overall I agree with your positivity. I think Horford makes us a legitimate contender. While Cleveland is still the favorite in the East, I think we have the ability to knock them off if the team comes together as good as it should. I'd say Boston and LAC are right about the same in terms of contending status. Cleveland, GS, and SAS are all the contending favorites, but both Boston and LAC have the potential to knock off any of those teams in a series of things would go right for them.

What about an Isaiah, Smart, Bradley, Crowder, Horford lineup.   Even Brown or Green could mix in there if Crowder plays power forward. That's pretty athletic and talented.  I think brown will stick at the guard and sf spots for now but he could play there too.

If the league wasn't just ball kicked by The Golden State Checkmate, I'd think we'd have a tiny shot at a title this year.   I love this team and it should continue to get better.  Should be a top 5 team but it's like being a top 2 team in a league where the only two teams are the Harlem Globetrotters and Washington Generals.

We can make the ECF this year.

Jerebko is my favorite player on this team, and I'm stoked Ainge brought him back. I also think Gerald Green could be a big addition, given his offensive capabilities. Horford's an under-the-radar star, but a star nonetheless, and his presence should give this team a huge lift—emotionally and statistically—and also takes some pressure of IT. Good things coming this season.

Many said the same thing in 2010-2011 regarding Miami - proved false;

Many said the same thing in 2014-2015 regarding Cleveland - proved false;

Many said the same thing throughout last season regarding GS's miraculous season - proved false;

You see a pattern here? I actually would bet that they don't win the title next year. Generally, newly formed super teams like that don't win the title their first year, with the 08 Celtics generally being the lone exception. And though they really only added one major star to the group, they pretty much gutted the bench and rest of the team to get him.

So, yeah, I would bet that someone other than Golden State would win the title next year. We should get a running poll/bet for this for next season.

none of those teams added a top 3 MVP talent (one of the most gifted offensive players in history) to a historical 73 win team built around 3 all-nba players in their prime.  On paper, the Warriors go undefeated this year.   But yeah, I get that other lesser "super teams" didn't immediately dominate.  This situation is a whole nother beast.   I'm excited about the Celtics but that golden state cloud hovers over everything.  Any game they lose will be more shocking than Team USA dropping an Olympic game.  You really can't compare Kevin durant joining a 73 win team to LeBron and Kevin love joining a 26 win team.  The Warriors would be the favorites to win the title next year even without Durant.

I think Ainge did a masterful job this offseason making smart decisions.

I have to agree, but we will find when the actual games are played.  I think the best decision he made was not trading the pick that became Jaylen Brown.  Signing Al Horford was a no-brainer, as was letting ET walk for $14M and forcing Sully to either take a discount or go elsewhere.  Otherwise the entire team is intact, and we kept almost all our future picks.  I am excited.

yeah but....we STILL need someone who can hit a Big Shot when we need it.

I have zero faith in any of our current players to do that---especially in the playoffs.
