if we got jr smith I would seriously consider not being a C's fan.

Again I would only want him so that Crowder can beat the crap out of the punk.

We can pay him $2.9 million.  If he'll take that, I'm on board.  But I don't see that happening.

I'm sure you know your stuff, but I'm confused now.

The link I posted above suggests we are already above the cap.

We already picked up one knucklehead in Gerald Green  having 2 could try even someone as patient as Brad.

Not interested.

I second this emotion...

SL is referring to the Room Mid-Level Exception which would allow us to pay a player just a hair under $2.9M for up to two years.

I agree with him though - I hate JR Smith, but that price is too low to beat. There would be obvious value, even in a mid-season trade.

Yes, the room exception is what I was talking about.  Sorry for not going into more detail -- I try not to waste too many words on JR Smith.

Confusion here. The first post assumed that we are over the cap which means you lose the room exception (but gain the MLE). If we are over the cap he could be paid the full MLE: nearly 6mill. Jr. will want at least double that.

We always have had the room exception.  We do not have the MLE -- we lost that when we used cap room to sign Horford.  The room exception is for teams who used cap room in free agency to be able to go over the cap to sign a low-cost free agent at more than the minimum.  I think the only teams with the MLE this year are Cleveland, Toronto, and the Clippers.  Everyone else has the room exception, because everyone had cap room.

Thanks for the clarifications. In which case, if all we have to offer is less than 3 mill he is not coming here.

And this brings me to my next point: the websites that claim the C's are ready to offer JR Smith 10+ mill. Really really bad journalism.

We could offer him $9 million using a S&T with Jerebko and Holland, but that would be silly given our depth at Jerenko's and Smith's respective positions.

I'd rather keep Jerebko than make a move for JR Smith.  We know Jerebko can produce in our system and get along with his teammates here in Boston.  I don't see us making a move for a role player like JR Smith with our current cap situation.

If we make moves, it's going to be for a star player.  I really wouldn't mind Blake Griffin or Cousins.  It sounds like Chicago is committed to building around Butler.  Would Paul George ever become available??
