7/26/16 — Renounced the rights to Luigi Datome.
7/26/16 — Signed Demetrius Jackson (2016-45th) to a four-year, partially-guaranteed $5.5 million contract.
7/26/16 — Signed Ben Bentil (2016-51st) to a three-year, partially-guaranteed $2.5 million contract.
7/27/16 — Signed Tyler Zeller to a two-year, partially-guaranteed $16 million contract
7/27/16 — Signed Gerald Green to a one-year, $1.4 million contract.
7/27/16 — Signed Jaylen Brown (2016-3rd) to a $4.7 million rookie-scale contract.

I got this list from Basketball Insiders.

I get releasing Datome first.  After that did it particularly matter which order these signings occurred? I think the C's were under the salary cap thru the entire process.

Saltlover, dangercart you out there?

Nope as far as I can see. We're operating under the cap, even after signing Zeller, so the timing doesn't matter.

If we were going above the cap, then it would've mattered for the Jackson and Bentil (though I'm not sure if it's a minimum deal here, haven't read up much on Bentil's deal). The others have exceptions to be able to be signed above the cap.

But yeah, there was little to no significance on the order of events here.

Edit: Forgot that we didn't renounce the rights to Yabusele and Zizic for this season, so we're indeed operating over the cap. So yes, the timing mattered.

Thanks saltlover for the reminder. Was using a table from an internet since I didn't have access to my own excel where I'm at and completely forgot about that detail. Thanks.

Yes, it did.

Datome took up cap room.  Jackson and Bentil were both signed using cap room, so they had to be signed first.

Then Zeller, who was signed with cap room, Bird rights (thanks Bud), Green who was signed under the minimum salary exception, and Brown who was signed to 120% of his cap hold (the max), could be signed.  It didn't matter the order of the last three, but they needed to occur after Jackson and Bentil.

We're not operating under the cap, according to Pincus and others.  Zizic and Yabusele still have cap holds, meaning either could be brought on during the season if bought out of their foreign contracts.

Just a clarification here, as far as I've been able to ascertain, Zeller was signed using Bird Rights, not with cap space.

Also, given that after all these moves we're still under the cap, as far as I can tell, I don't think it mattered the order of any of them.

Ah! That's correct, I completely forgot about that little tidbit.

Then yes, you're correct, the timing did matter since we went over the cap after taking Zizic and Yabusele into account.

D'oh, meant Bird rights, typed cap room.

I was wracking my brain over the significance of why Zeller was signed with Bird Rights if we were still under the cap. It wasn't making sense to me lol, then of course, Yabusele and Zizic :p

Why do Zizic and Yab have cap holds and Colt Iverson doesn't.  Is this something that the C's elect to give themselves options mid season or is this because the 2 rooks have not signed their international contracts just yet (although I believe Zizic is in the middle of a multi year deal)? Because they are 1st rounders vs Colt being a second round pick? What gives?

Because they are first round picks.  1st rounders have a cap hold depending on their draft spot.  This cap hold determines what their slotted salary is.  2nd round picks have no such slot, and thus no hold.

Thanks, just to follow up:

So the amount of their cap holds is 100% of 2016 - 2017 rookie scale salary for the 16th and 23rd position (vs. Brown being actually signed at 120%).

And the cap holds will be on the C's books year after year until C's actually sign them or rescind them?

That is correct.  And the holds will be based on the current year cap holds for their respective draft positions, so the holds will increase next summer.

The cap hold will be in our books this year as long as a written agreement isn't in place that states that they won't be getting a contract this season.

Also, once the season starts, I'm pretty sure their cap holds are removed, and once their non-NBA season ends, their cap hold returns even if our season hasn't ended. So there's a period during the season in which their cap hold won't be factored in even without the written agreement for not offering a contract this season. Haven't studied this type of scenario in depth, so curious how this will play out.

Also keep in mind that once Summer comes, we still retain their rights since even if we retained the cap hold during the season, the mere situation of them signing a non-NBA professional contract already freezes their rights clock.

It does.

While many people think that it had to do with salary cap, my research indicates that the order of transactions is actually a secret religious, pro-peace message from the Celtics. Look:

First, we got rid of Luigi. The name Luigi means "Renowned fighter."
Then, we signed Demetrius. Demetrius is the Latinized form of an Ancient Greek name that translates as "devoted to Demeter." As you may know, Demeter is the Greek goddess of the harvest.

The reference is clear: Isaiah 2:3-4 "and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks." We got rid of the weapons and turned to the harvest.

Okay, then we signed Ben Bentil. As everyone knows, Benjamin is derived from the Hebrew name "Binyamin," meaning "son of my right hand." A further derivation turns us to the Arabic "ibn amin," or "favored son." The term comes from the story of Jacob, who chose Benjamin as his favored son after he believed Joseph was dead.

Clearly, the Bentil signing symbolized that success would only come through signing a favored son. The obvious choice is Tyler Zeller, since Tyler derives from the old English word that means door keeper of an inn. Um, can anyone think of a favored son who had an issue at the inn? Exactly. Zeller was the means by which we would provide entrance to the inn. Ironically, Zeller also symbolizes the person who kept Jesus out of the inn. Translated into basketball terms, he's our rim protector who will keep LeBron at bay.

So now that we are on the road to peace, we can prepare for our victory. Thus, the return of the prodigal son. Is there any question why his last name is Green? Having completed our transition, the culmination is the triumph of green. Note that this lead us to banner #18. The number 18 is lucky in Hebrew, as the letters spell out the word Chai, meaning "life."

Seriously, do I have to do all the work around here?

Mike

P.S. Brown came last because we couldn't trade him.
