Even as an Okafor detractor, I'd agree to this trade in an instant. If you're giving up so little, it's totally worth rolling the dice on Okafor's talent. This would be a desparate move by Philly--surely they can get a better package from someone else.

TP. Exactly my thoughts, too.

I am astounded that anyone here thinks we'd be robbed by Philly, lol.

Are you ready to pay Kelly 15 million per year or more next year?

He impacts winning on both ends and is a great fit for the Celtics.  Okafor doesn't do either.

If Philly wants guards we got them, we can throw in Hunter or Jackson.

Probably won't move the needle.

Who knows how many minutes or touches he gets, but he is a go to scorer when you need a bucket, and we could use that.

The problem is, this isn't baseball.  Specialists are only rotation players on bad teams.  The acquisition of Horford makes a trade for Okafor even less likely.

can't imagine why Philly would do that.
Agreed.  They'd take Smart for Okafor straight up (an offer that probably has been on the table for Philly) before they take this package.

I've almost given up on Young, so it's basically Kelly and Rozier for Okafor.  I wouldn't do it.  I understand that there are folks out there who will consider this position crazy, but I am really not a fan of Okafor.  I have a hard time picturing him in the role of significant contributor to a real contender.  I guess for me the best case scenario would be him playing a kind of Enes Kanter or Mo Speights type role as a super sub, big man scorer off the bench.

That's a nice role, but not worth giving up two young players who I still have high hopes can be very productive players on good teams.  I think that in the right situation, Kelly can be a starter on a good team.  Not a number one, two, or three starter, but a really dangerous, versatile player as your fourth or fifth option.  Offensively, his versatility is almost unmatched as a big.  He can stretch the floor, he can put the ball on the floor and create offense, he's a good passer, he can finish in the lane, run the floor.

Defensively, he gets ripped apart by fans.  And, I agree that at times he looks cringe worthy, but the fact is that the numbers consistently have shown that the team performs better defensively when he is out there.  The evidence adds up.  When you start to look for the good things he does, as opposed to focusing on the bad, you notice that he is very clever as a pick and roll defender.  He rarely overcommits to either the guard or the big and gets caught completely in no man's land.  He plays angles and space well.  This helps explain his very solid career steal stats.  He gets most of them playing the pick and roll smartly.  He's adequate as a one on one defender in the post.  I feel like his weakness is covering perimeter oriented bigs, but, hey, I'm not saying he's perfect.

Anyway, this turned into a bit of a Kelly Olynyk admiration post.  It's been a while since I've had one of those.  I look forward to seeing him play this coming season after coming off what was definitely a disappointing, injury riddled campaign last year.  If he stays healthy, I see him as a crucial third bit in the rotation along with Big Al and Amir.  I know Kelly has teased us before and never really managed to put it all together.  Hopefully, this is the year.

Oh, and I like Terry Rozier too.

When Marcus Smart continues to be Marcus Dumb on offense, we will need Rozier, (who showed he can play the point, run an offense, in summer league) --if they want Smart straight up - do it.

I think that he's a seventh or eighth man on a good team, which pretty much describes him last year.  His upside is seventh man on a contender; he's a perfect fit for Boston going forward.

On the whole I agree - a much better team defender than individual.  I rate his post defense lower than you do, but he's a reliable plus on defense overall.

His season was certainly disappointing at the end with the injury, which obviously neutralized him in the playoffs.

But before the injury, he was excellent; and he contributed a great deal to the team's success last season.

I agree.  The injury was a real shame.  He was having a very good (I won't quite go with "excellent") season up to that point.

There is no way that is the package for Okafor.  None at all.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Are you a sixers fan?

Are u serious bro? The only rotation player last year is Kelly, and he's made out of Canadian Jell-O, and your going to have to pay him 60 million next year. Still want to keep him?

Easy now.

Kelly's per 36 numbers
17.7 pts 7.3 rbs 2.7 ast 1.3 stl .9 blk

Okafor's per 36 numbers
21 pts 8.4 rbs 1.5 ast .5 stl 1.4 blk

Kelly hits 40% from 3
Okafor hits 51% from 2

We're talking about comparable players here.  Both are specialists that are best suited to be valuable role players on a good team.

Interesting.

Hadn't seen them compared like that.

Plus, Kelly is a much, much better defender.

Shoot...I might be wrong.

I mean, sure, the market value, age, contract, hype would still make this a steal for us according to most of the world. But upon further review...the question now should be, why is Okafor supposed to be actually more valuable than Olynyk on the court?

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Kelly is also like six years older than Okafor. I like Kelly a lot and wish we could keep him on a rookie contract forever, but you have to deal him in a package for Okafor if you are keeping all of your other major pieces.

Still, it is irrelevant unless a third team is involved for Kelly's services. Philly wants to deal away bigs, not bring more in. I guess he at least can spread the floor.

No Rollie, he played at Duke, it was Winslow, Tyus Jones, and Okafor that won the title he was the best player all year, with Winslow stepping up in the tournament.
