Great players don't get traded on the first two years of their deals. And deals are now all 4 years (with player option after 3) or 5 years (with a player option after 4).

Any player we trade for is going to be either a FA after a single season or best case scenario you get them for two. If you're not willing to trade for a rental player or a short term deal you're just not willing to trade for great talent.

Jaylen Brown, AJ, 2018 Brooklyn pick, 2018 Celtics pick for Westbrook?

For a one-year rental?   Pass.

a) Convince me that Westbrook would truly want to stay in Boston and

b) Convince me how we can then convert IT into an upgrade at another part of our roster (since his talents would be under-utilized if pushed to the bench).   Please be explicit and don't just say, "Trade IT for a rim protector!"

then I'll consider this something we should think about doing.

Absent those two things, this sounds like a horrible idea.

Alternatively, convince me that a one-year rental of Westbrook would result in Banner 18.  I'd be okay with it then, of course.    'Not seeing it, though.

Pretty much sums up my feelings.

Goran Dragic threw the Suns' front office under the bus while publicly demanding a trade and Phoenix still got two unprotected first rounders for him, despite his contract expiring in just a few months at that point. OKC will have no shortage of suitors for Westbrook, so anyone thinking "hey, Amir Johnson, James Young, and Boston's lottery-protected first in 2023 should get it done" isn't being realistic.

Why can't RWB and IT start together?  RWB averaged 10 assist/game last year, and he would limit the need for IT to make those (admittedly brave) drives to the basket.  IT could hang by the 3 pt line.
The defense is why. IT isn't a good defender and Westbrook doesn't always try on defense. It would be an enormous step back for us defensively to start the two of those guys.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Westbrook is one of the top 2 or 3 guards in the league. By himself, I don't think he makes the Celtics a contender. But with a healthy Griffin or Cousins, it's a different ballgame. They could conceivably have room for Westbrook and one of the other two if they deal the right players, but it sounds like a longshot--especially when you hear Ainge is so reluctant to trade his precious 17 and 18 Nets picks. They, of course, would have to be dealt in these type of deals. One pick per star, please.

That seems like an incredibly sinful waste of his best talent.

TP, very underappreciated point. Teams aren't just willingly selling away top 15-20 players unless they absolutely have to.

Just said this in another thread. Stars don't get traded in the middle of their contracts, that's just not realistic anymore with the new CBA.
2021 Houston Rockets

SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo/Robert Covington

IT is not going back to the bench.  He was an all star, he already talked about getting paid next contrack, and he considers himself the face of the franchise.  Either the6 have to both start or he would need to go.

Also, Westbrook couldn't win with KD and Ibaka, what makes people think he can with Horford and IT?  plus hasnt KD basicaly said he was one of the reasons he left OKC?  Throw in that he could bolt after the season and thereisno way i make a.move for him.

If Brad thinks he can work with Russ's talent, which I trust he can, and if Westbrook is willing to renegotiate and extend, then you go get him, almost regardless of cost.
Isaiah, you were lightning in a bottle.

Westbrook isn't going to extend his contract for the same reason Kevin Love, Goran Dragic, and any other premier player with an expiring contract who's been traded in recent years hasn't extended their contracts with their new teams.

*cough* James Harden *cough*

Not the same situation given his deal had 2 years left but the lowered cap projections make it more possible.

We should grab any elite NBA player that we can. Let other teams worry about drafting Harry Giles or even Harry Styles. The love that so many posters have for teenagers over top 10 NBA players is really baffling.

When Danny did the KG trade they got Garnett to agree to an extension prior to completing the deal.  Couldn't they do that here?

It would be in the best interest of both teams.  Then you send along a package that allows OKC to rebuild - ie. Nets picks, Smart etc.

Otherwise you're renting him for the season.
