Since news is slow and I'm bored I thought I'd throw out a post on how I've seen the SL.

First off, despite what the announcers said in the last C's game, the officiating has been deplorable.  Admittedly, if they called every foul the games would last five hours but it is really hard to judge players when they are getting manhandled and hacked on every shot, drive, and rebound.  It is ridiculous, and players don't care because they have ten fouls.  They can hack, hold and hammer away without worrying at all.  Add in the 10 minute quarters and it makes for some pretty hard to watch basketball.

They need to change the ten foul thing back to six since the quarters are shorter.  So what if you foul out of a summer league game.  And if you do, maybe you don't need to get an NBA job anyway.

As for our players, I'll go over each one that has at least some promise of being an NBA player some day.  That means no discussing Thorton.

Rozier.  The guy isn't a point guard.  You have to look at him as an undersized two guard.  He can't run the pick and roll or pop to save his life.  He hasn't hit a rolling guy once this summer.  Worse, he hasn't even tried, but then again neither has anyone else, save one.  I think he can be a back up guard if we have a forward that can help with the playmaking but other than that I see him being really limited.

RJ Hunter.  I have loved his defense but he should have been called for a foul on every single play against Phoenix.  His shooting was great, his shot selection....atrocious.  He has to develop a floater or some way of finishing going to the hoop.  He was the lone player to hit the rolling guy on a pick'n'roll.  It lead to a missed shot by Mickey, more on him later.

Jaylen Brown.  Well he seems like he hasn't settled in yet.  He has gotten to the line which is impressive with these refs and his defense has been good at times.  I'd give him and incomplete so far.

Bentil.  I like what I've seen, which hasn't been much.  Hard to say what he could be, but I know he could score in college so I think he can in the pros.

Mickey.  Bass called, he wants his hands back.  And for a guy who bases his game off shot blocks, he let a lot of Phoenix shots go up uncontested.  His problem is, he leaves his hands down to explode into the jump to block shots.  A lot of the time he doesn't get the chance, so not only is he not jumping, he doesn't even have a hand up to contest.

Yab.  I think he could be a good bench guy but he has to kick it up a gear getting up and down the floor, especially on defense.  If I were the coach I'd have yanked his butt off the court for jogging several times against the Suns.  Big guy who can shoot though, that has some promise.

Young.  Has been as bad defensively as I have ever seen.  Knees straight, bends and the waist and instead of moving his feet, reaches.  Just awful.

Nader.  I like everything I've seen from him.  He finishes through contact.  He has been solid on defense.  He has knocked down some threes.  He dribbles well enough for his position and he finishes strong when possible, but when it isn't he can put up awkward shots that are really soft.  His step back jumpers have been terrible, but that is pretty nitpicky for a first year guy.

Everyone else hasn't been worth mentioning.  Jackson is horrible.  He seems terribly undersized and can't run the offense against pressure.  He starts our offense like 50ft from the basket.  He can't pass.  His shot is inconsistent.  He is basically useless.

So that is our SL crew.  Guys with promise, Hunter, Yab, Brown and maybe Nader.  Guys with potential to maybe develop into role players, maybe, Rozier, Bentil and Mickey.  And nothing else worth having on an NBA roster.  At least that is the way I see it.

After the Dallas game I'd say, no change at all on Rozier.  Yeah he can score against D-League talent at the rim but probably not so easily in real games.  He can hit threes though, and that will carry over.  He just isn't a point guard.  If we expect him to be, we will get hammered.  RJ Hunter is a much better point guard than Rozier.  I've never seen a worse guard at running the pick and roll.

Hunter doesn't make spectacular plays but he usually makes the right play.  Still, his shot selection leaves something to be desired.  He also tries to leak out too often and it costs us some rebounds, ditto Young.

Brown still gets the the line.  And I will throw out, he has some really quick and strong hands.

Yab still loafs down the court.

Mickey still has Bass hands and despite what the announcers said, doesn't play tough at all.  Minus one hard screen, I can't think of anything tough he did.

Nader, I still haven't seen anything I don't like about him.

Bentil is getting almost no run and very few looks at the rim so I'm not ready to cast him out just yet, but time is running out.

Jackson is useless.

And finally, Young.  He played harder on defense against Dallas if not better.  He has a sweet shot that he can hit with people flying at him.  I'm just not sure it is enough.

Agree with most of what you said but for Rozier. Tough to criticize him for the PnR when we don't have a big on this SL squad who could run it.

TP for the thread and thoughts.
A much more tangible matter than all of these potential/fake trades.
Even with the mentioned minuses TR could give us a much cheaper Bradley replacement.
Some similarities:
- they can shot, probably will improve
- have a SG skillset in a PG body
- tenacity and the defensive aproach, they can and want to get that 50/50 ball

I agree on Rozier if you watch how disorganized they were the one game Rozier did not play, while he may not be the most instinctive PG, Terry has put in the work to learn the offense and makes the effort to organize the offense, and is fairly effective.  That puts him ahead of Marcus Smart and pretty much describes the other point options we have, including Isaiah, now that Evan Turner is gone.

smart and avery got to teach rozier how to get over screens sometimes he just gets flat out stuck, nobody mentions roziers ability to rebound,he gets up quick and uses that wingspan-sometimes has trouble splitting defenders but better than last year and really in your face quick defenders can give him trouble-
hunter struggles with the team chaos-he seems to thrive when playing up as a intregal part-some of his shot selection is dominated by time on clock
-i think last years team played much more organized-and nadel the surprise with yabusele
i like his height to weight to wingspan -nothing phases him just takes whats there -more like rj last year in summer league
he is a basketball player that moves his feet well on defense-

Overall, pretty spot on observations.  Agree completely on Rozier.  While he can score at this level, and he has gotten better as PG, that's not his natural position.  He's more than likely a life-long tweener in the league and will have to find a role.  Will never be a full time starter.

Nader has been a pleasant surprise. Play at his pace (never rushes) and just makes the easy plays.  We'll see how this translates (maybe) in the NBA but maybe we have us a future bench guy.

And yeah, Jackson and Bentil will struggle to make the team.  This is funny of course because these were the two guys everyone seemed to be excited about after the draft.  As it is, I guess there is a reason they fell to the second round and they each may have to go overseas to make a living.

Just watche last  night game wif Mavs .

Brown showed up. Then he was drafted third . Should be good. Rozier is a nice little guard.

But hands down .....a guy that makes a difference ..

Nader impresses me the most .  He plays defense hard 100 % .  Always runs hard on the transition .
Very smooth and STRONG ......Young was laying on the floor belly down.  Nader reached down and snatched him up like a puppy.

Nader makes Young and Hunter look like kids .  Babb with better IQ for game.

Nader is type of guy that can come in and spell Crowder and punish other smaller players.

Does anyone else see a ton of Denzel Valentine in Naders game? Versatile wing/forward that can pass, shoot, score, pretty much do whatever

I agree that Rozier is not a true "point" but CBS does not employ a True Point to run his offense.. in fact there is not one True Point guard on the roster outside of the Rookie Jackson (who I dont think there is room for him to realistically made the club) ..  CBS doesn't even acknowledge the point position so it doesn't trouble me that Rozier is not a True point.

Also remember Rozier is running with rookies, bums and bench role players.. Normally when this happens the only thing you can really display offensively in summer league is your ability to score which he has shown in spades..  You can see his obvious improvement, not in the fact that he can score but how he is scoring - He is playing with controlled speed unlike last year when he was just a constant out of control fast guy, even in summer league..

If Turner was playing in Summer league this year with this group he would pretty much look the same.. A ton dribbling and a ton of scoring.

Nadar does look pretty good, very strong, and quick but he seems to need to get stronger in his post defense. He does remind me of a poor man JJ

The Dancing bear is still intriguing..  His conditioning needs work - he conserves energy later in games jogging back but I have never seen him being outrun by the play so I don't think that's a big deal yet.. He stays active on both sides of the ball though.. Always setting huge screens and always rolling..  He can put the ball on the floor and he can shoot from the outside. On defense there are tools but work is needed.. I think Hortford and Johnson can scream him into shape pretty quick though..  from the interview I get the feeling that CBS is very impressed with the guy so far..

Brown has not been statistically impressive but there are good signs.. He stays aggressive, He gets and plays through contact.. He doesn't let the last play effect the next play.. He ignores trash talk but still plays with a level of swag..  He is a competitor..  I really like the guy..

Hunter looks like a guy who can come in every 3rd or 4th game and give us a 7 point explosion. He's pretty solid on defense, long and smart.. Looks like he is starting to develop a little bit of a dog which he sorely needs in my opinion.. I always thought he was a bit soft..  Maybe Marcus, Crowder and Bradley are rubbing off on him finally.

Young needs more good moments but the last game he actually made plays defensively..  He stayed in front at least and he grabbed a couple of boards in traffic.. He looks like he still believes he is a kid playing with men.. ZERO aggressiveness about him.. No strength in anything that he does..  whats the use in gaining weight and getting stronger if he cant/doesn't/wont use it..   but still young though..

How come I've watched more summer league than NBA finals ? Is there something wrong with me ?

This isn't basketball, it's Chuck-O-Rama. If you hit for 30 plus a night, Sebastian Telfair style, you're labeled a hall of famer. If you go for under 10, you're an immediate bust.

I don't get it. Forgive me.

I truly believe the only player on our roster out there that's playing actual basketball is Yabusele. Screening, moving the ball, looking for a good shot or open man, etc.

Imagine that, basketball ! Not Kobe Bryant chuck ball.

I can't gauge anybody on this style. If you could, Greg Ostertag & Telfair would be inducted today.

Nadar is way more physical than Valentine..  Valentine is more of a playmaker while Nadar is more of a finisher to me (if that makes any sense)
