Is a Horford Exit Strategy part of Danny's 2 year plan?

Is it conceivable to think that Horford is a chess piece who will do the following for us:

1. Increase the likelihood of Boston becoming a free agent destination by way of playoff success.
2. Lure a larger fish via free agency.
3. Become a trade chip to package for a younger player.

Think about this for a moment...

In 2016/17 we compete and win a couple playoff series accomplishing 1 & 2.

In 2017/18 we continue to compete for 1st half of year and trade Horford + parts (picks) at the deadline for DeMarcus Cousins accomplishing 3.

Food for thought...

If sac is trading away cousins, it's presumably trying to get younger, not trying get a 32 year old making $30 mil per year. I get the picks part, but in 2017/18 many teams will be willing to trade picks for cousins.

Trading Horford to a contender for a younger player would be a more sensible option but probably still will he difficult to engineer considering the matching of his salary.

You can't sign a huge free agent and then trade him away.  It significantly damages your reputation and no one will come here with the same leadership still in charge.  Now if Horford demands a trade that is different, but then it doesn't look good that your big free agent demands a trade either.

This. IT probably has the most trade value with his production to what he gets payed. But if DA traded every player that produced well, no one would want to come here. Plus IT was sent to the all star game with one purpose, lure players here, and he snagged one. That and the Boston fans helped to. You can't get rid of a guy who praises the fans and was impressed by them while playing for the other team and saying it was the tipping point of him picking Boston.

This sounds like good logic on the surface, but Chicago just traded away Rose and then signed D Wade. It's not exactly the same as trading a FA signing, but I'm just not sure players and agents pay really close attention to things like that. $, current playing time available, and current roster strength seem to be the 3 main factors. If you have the best offer in terms of those 3 things, you're probably gonna land the FA no matter what.

Trading away Rose is nowhere near the same thing as trading away Horford.  Perhaps in the final year of the contract Boston could reasonably get away with trading Horford and it not doing much damage, but short of him demanding a trade, Horford cannot be traded by Boston without it doing damage.

This is not a video game. You cannot do that to a big free agent signing without serious repercussions. For all intents and purposes, Horford is untouchable for the foreseeable future.

Sure, but if Danny traded Horford after this season we would pretty much be guaranteeing we never get another major free agent signing with Danny as GM.

The only way Horford is traded is if he requests one, or if he develops a Bosh-like condition, can never play again, and the Celtics need the cap room.  That's it.
