In my opinion, Danny Ainge has done it again.
Now that we know that KD was pretty much determined to join the Golden State Yankees, it is obvious to me that Danny had little expectation anything could be done to get KD here. I believe he knew this for a long time. There were no amount of trades possible that would make these Celtics better than the prospect of joining a 73-win championship team, with its young core completely intact.
I was at the NBA Draft party when Wyc literally cringed at the boos cascading from the rafters. Of the couple thousand people in attendance, I was maybe one of 20 who loved the Jaylen Brown pick. Apparently they knew something that Danny didn't, but again his critics have been left with little to complain about.
I cannot imagine what I would feel like as a Cs fan right now if we had traded that pick, other Brooklyn picks, and any one of Smart/Crowder/Bradley for Jimmy Butler. I am not so sure that Al Horford would have even signed here if that happened. Even if he did, we wouldn't be much better than the Raptors, and we would have mortgaged our entire future for the dim prospect of beating GSW to the Durant punch...and in retrospect there was never a shot of that happening.
Instead, I sit here today saying to myself that - outside of GSW - I don't think there is a team that has had a better offseason than the Celtics. Admittedly, I am biased. But it is absolutely clear to me that Jaylen Brown was the best player available AND best fit for this team at #3. I believe trading him for Butler (and especially Noel/Okafor) would be a mistake we would rue for years. Picking Brown makes even more sense now, as we will need an army of defenders to have any shot of beating Cleveland and GSW. The addition of Horford was such a major victory for this team as he is the absolute perfect fit for everything we needed in a big. We may now have the best defense in the NBA.
Then you step back and realize that this is one of the youngest teams in the NBA and we legitimately have a shot at Top 5 picks for the next two drafts. There is a chance they could even be #1 picks. We could be adding the best talent on the planet to a team that may very well win 55 games and challenge Cleveland for a trip to the NBA Finals.
I hope those fans that booed Wyc that night are on their feet when the season starts. This rebuild has been nothing short of remarkable.
