Let me start off by saying that I like the pick and hope Brown turns into a great player.

They were both one and done in college, have similar NBA ready bodies, and have had concerns with their shooting. Johnson went 8th to the Pistons last year and is showing good promise in the league.

Can we expect Jaylen Brown to be become a player a step above Johnson? Just wanted to get others thoughts on this.

My take is that Brown will be a better slasher than Johnson and he appears to be a little quicker which can make him a better player on both ends.

I think he is more like a Justice Winslow 2.0, will be a very good defender, but has a lot more upside offensively than winslow.

Better defender

No, he's not.

I think Brown has high upside to be a better defender. Johnson wasn't known for his defense coming out of college.

What are you basing your 'No he's not' ?

Are you kidding me? Johnson was being compared to Artest because he had a strong build and was a very good defender in college. I'm not sure you know what you're talking about. Go to DX or nbadraft.net if you don't believe me.

Both Winslow and Johnson seem like strait line drive guys, Brown has more creativity to probe the defense laterally which I think personally gives him a higher offensive upside.

Pulling for the kid, he's said all the right things up until now lets see him put the work to turn into the franchise wing that he's capable of becoming.

People think this is a overused comparison, but I think Brown will develop into our Butler. Their freshman years are very comparable in that relied on athleticism and a solid motor to get transition buckets and get buckets in the paint. Brown arguably showed more as a freshman than Butler did as a freshman and to me they have very similar games. Glad we took him and I don't expect him to make the jump next year, but the year after next like Butler did.

Johnson is better at playing the passing lanes (1.5 spg vs 0.8 } and his bigger frame allows him to cover 4's much more effectively. Going into advanced college metrics, Johnson was also much better in defensive win shares (2.9 to 1.8 }, defensive box plus/minus (5.4 to 3.3), and defensive rating (87.6 to 97.1).

Wow our #3 pick may be as good as a #6 who doesn't exactly wow me to begin with.

A better version of him with a lot more upside. To be fair Johnson also was starting to look good in the playoffs, especially for a rookie. Why be needlessly negative?

I do think Brown potentially has more to his game and could develop into a better 2 way player than Johnson, who seems a bit stiff offensively and has a very low release point. I don't think he'll be as good as Johnson defensively, but he could potentially be pretty close.

Brown is a lot more athletic than the Stanimal, but unfortunately, Johnson is a better prospect in every other way. He was an excellent NCAA defender, while Brown showed flashes but was inconsistent. Johnson got twice as many steals as Brown; steals are incredibly predictive of NBA success. More importantly, Johnson was a more efficient scorer with far better advanced stats. An OBPM of 4.8 vs 0.3 for Brown. 55% vs 52% TS%. 22.5 vs 17.6 PER. 37% vs 29% 3p%.

There is an argument to be made that Brown would have been better on a team with better spacing, but he himself was part of the reason for poor spacing, and the Celtics don't exactly provide a ton of floor spacing either.

Brown has a higher upside on both ends.  Johnson is not as quick as brown. And brown is more explosive. Both are equally strong
