Who do you think the top defender is at each position? Build your perfect All-Defensive team from the league right now that would be able to D up anything you threw at it. Here's mine:

1) Bradley - Now, you could easily go Paul here, too, but due to Bradley's youth, size and length advantages, and pressuring ability, he's the guy for me.

2) Smart - Starting off with two Celtics might come off biased, but I think they're both the best defenders at their position and defensively complement each other very well. Where Bradley is a pressure defender using all out hustle and footwork, Smart is a heady defender that relies on his BBIQ and strength to read and predict movements and body up defenders. He'd also have no issue of switching into 1's and 3's. Paul is too small for the 2 ideally. A case could be made for Allen here, but he's slipped with age some. Butler could be considered, too, but his larger role on offense has took away from his D in recent years.

3) Kawhi - No other answer here. 2-time defending DPOY deserves it hands down.

4) Green - This was tough, because I don't like having an undersized 4 here. However, it's tough to argue that he's not the best defensive 4 in the game. A strong case could be made for Milsap or George, too, especially with their added size, but I went with Green after watching the porous rim protection in that last Finals game.

5) DJ - This one was also tough, because I didn't know whether to take the more athletic DJ or go with the better team defender in Gasol to quarterback the defense from the paint. However, I prioritized the ability to switch onto guards and forwards, so I went with DJ, though Gasoline is certainly a worthy pick, too.

Who would you pick as the starting five of a defensive squad that could handle any team that was thrown at it?

I think that team would have problems guarding any decent bigger low post scorers.

Noel
Green
James
Butler
Paul

I like the more versatile and dirty defenders.  I wavered on Noel a great deal, but ultimately thought he was the right guy even.

I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

R.Gobert
D.Green
K.Leonard
P.George
J.Wall

The first three make sense, but PF - George and John Wall? You may not agree that AB and Smart should take both guard spots, but they are both extremely effective, yet have different styles. One would think you would at least include the one you like the most.

The same as the one you suggested, but I'd take Tony Allen over Smart and Anthony Davis over DJ

Bradley
Allen
Leonard
Green
Davis
I'm bitter.

I'll go a little outside the box here and present my chaos squad. Great +/- but also a ridiculous number of possessions gained with blocks and steals.

Marcus Smart
Kawhi Leonard
Draymond Green
Nerlens Noel
Rudy Gobert

That lineup has two guys (Leonard/ Green) who can defend 1-5; two elite rim protectors... and averages around 20+ (!) steals + blocks per 48 minutes. Everyone on the team can defend at least 2 positions at a high level.

I'm not sure they are all individually the best at each position (although close), but as a squad it would be interesting.

Smart plays pressure defense in this lineup- despite all the Bradley hype, he's a less well rounded defender IMO. Opposing guards of all types beware.

Leonard is your Ron Artest type. Take one scorer and lock him down.

Green is the swiss army knife.

Noel is the unique steals + blocks hybrid for the 4/5 spot, and would be insane come from the weak side when Gobert is already rim protecting.

Gobert is simply the longest elite defender in the league. He can recover from anywhere on the court. Between Gobert, Noel and Kawhi there is simply no open space in the half court.

In short, to score on these guys:

1) You have to get into your offense against pressure from Smart
2) You have to get free from Leonard and/or Green, or post up Noel/Gobert
3) You have to move/shoot the ball inside the arc with wingspans of Gobert (7'8"), Noel (7'4"), Kawhi (7'3"), Green (7'1"), Smart (6'9")

I think mine would be the same as yours, Jpotter, but with Gobert at the 5. I'd consider using Chris Paul at the point instead of Bradley also.
Isaiah, you were lightning in a bottle.
