Really Eddie, you think Bender will be awesome down the road?
This is based on reputable scouting reports because I don't try to pass 100% judgement without watching him play (youtube videos not withstanding).
The way the league is trending and the way we play, where pace and pace and player versatility is at a premium, I do feel that Bender's ceiling is very high.
Offensively- He has the ability to handle the ball, plays with a very high IQ, runs the floor well, and can stretch the floor effectively.
Defensively- He has very good feet and instincts and is able to defend the PNR extremely well. In fact, defensively that's currently his greatest strength. However, with his 9-3 standing reach and the expected increased size as his body matures, he could eventually slide over to a stretch 5 down the road, which would cause more matchup problems for teams.
So him as the #3 pick has more to do with the way the game has changed. If it were 20 years ago Okafor would be the better player, but he's not. He would get eaten alive in high PNR and would be borderline unplayable against good pg's that run the PNR well. During the playoffs, teams will scheme against him and he would get exploited badly.
I do like Brown a lot. Especially the more I read about his mental makeup. So I have him a close 2nd at the moment to Bender.
