Love right now is a better player than Okafor will ever be, so anyone who wants to trade #3 for Okafor should be overjoyed if you could get Love for equivalent value.
Is it fair to say Okafor is a softer defender than Love?
Okafor isn't a finished product. His defense could theoretically get better. Love's just sucks.
I could theoretically win a million Bucks on a scratch ticket tomorrow but that doesn't mean it's likely to happen.
Okafor is a downright terrible defender, as is Love, and even if he becomes a Sullinger level defender (his ceiling in that department, IMO), it won't be good enough to justify feeding him the ball in the post to force shots against double teams 10-15 times a game. Love is a better offensive player than Okafor, could potentially be had for less, and is easier to fit into your offensive and defensive schemes than Okafor just by his ability to play the stretch 4 role.
I know I people like the idea of a young guy with "potential" to improve, and Okafor can improve in some areas for sure, particularly passing. But this dude will NEVER be able to switch onto anyone, he'll never be more than an average rebounder, and if he's lucky will become as good as Brook Lopez or Sullinger protecting the rim. It just won't happen. That's not exactly the kind of guy I wanna play heavy minutes and feature so heavily in my offense.
