I know trades generally happen at the draft itself, but wouldn't it make sense for the receiving team of the pick to make the trade as soon as possible?

For example, if we would trade for Butler with our pick, wouldn't Chicago want it as early as possible to gauge their options? They won't get many guys to workout for them at that range due to being the last pick in the lottery, so wouldn't they want the trade to happen before the draft in order to workout all potential prospects?

So when will a trade happen if we trade the pick?

A trade normally won't happen until draft day.  If a team wants the Celtics pick, they have a specific player in mind.  Even though Simmons and Ingram are seen as the top two choices, that's not a given.  Maybe another player moves up into the top two due to workouts.  Maybe that is the player the other team is targeting.  Maybe the Celtics like the player who drops.
