Teams miss on draft picks all the time, but the difference between the 1st pick and the 5th pick is the ability to draft any of the four players that get drafted 1, 2, 3, and 4.  And the difference in the trade value between the 1st and 5th pick is significantly greater as well.

Boston may very well end up with the best player in the draft no matter where Boston selects, but there is an incredibly difference between having the 1st pick and the 5th pick.

Thing is, we kinda needed the Captain here.

Some people are just trying to be positive. Obviously the number 1 pick has higher trade value than lower picks. Also you can obviously choose from more available players at 1 than other positions. Does this need to be pointed out if a few people try to brace themselves for disappointment?

Um, no.  I was commenting on the opening post where he was talking about all these great players going later and all of these teams taking the wrong player with a high pick.

My point was, you have to assume you are going to make the right selection, and thus there is a very clear and very significant difference between the 1st and 5th picks.  Not only in players available for selection but also trade value.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

What part of this isn't obvious or needs to be pointed out? The original poster is trying to look for a silver lining in what will most likely be a disappointing result tonight (and put a decent amount of effort into doing so). You want to throw water on the idea with the extremely obvious statements that "you have to assume you are going to make the right selection, and thus there is a very clear and very significant difference between the 1st and 5th picks.  Not only in players available for selection but also trade value."

You must kill at cocktail parties moranis.
