I would be super pleased if this happened.

Conley makes a lot of sense as a Spur.

Does Conley leaving help or hurt our pick?

Do we want Memphis to bottom out, or to be stuck in mediocrity with an aging roster?

We want them to be bad but not so bad the pick doesn't convey, right?  Unless they somehow stay truly awful long enough for it to be unprotected in like 2021 or whatever.  Isn't that how it works?

I get the sense Memphis will try to remain respectable, even if Conley leaves and they deal Gasol.

But in general I think it's safest with future picks to hope for a late lottery pick and be pleasantly surprised if it works out better than that.

What do they really have to look forward to, though? Are top players looking to flock to Memphis with their aging core? If they lose Conley, it will only be a matter of time before Gasol, Z-Bo, Allen, etc decline rapidly/retire; if that's the case, they will probably be horrible for several years. Look at the T-Wolves - things couldn't have worked out better for them in terms of the draft the last several years and they are still pretty terrible (I imagine they are ready to make the jump soon). I will take a top 3-4 pick in 2021 over a top 12 pick in 2019. I am a Celtic fan for life (like everybody else here) and am willing to be patient for top tier assets.

That would definitely help us for several reasons:

1) They can't sign both Durant AND Conley, so signing Conley would mean Durant is no longer an option for the Spurs. Hell, they're going to have to do some serious cap management to just sign one of them.

2) Signing Conley would once again make them a very, very deadly threat in the West, even after this horrible showing in the playoffs. That could definitely be another deciding factor in Durant heading East. Their defense would be EVEN SCARIER if they started Conley alongside Green, and their bench would be bolstered by Parker's presence.

3) Conley leaving would also make it much more likely that the Grizzlies would trade Gasol, who in turn is probably much more attractive to someone like Durant than a Boogie or a younger player.

I can't really say how it affects the pick we get from them, but that's a long ways off anyways. Conley going to the Spurs is nothing but excellent from our perspective.
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

Durant's not leaving OKC.

We should pursue Conley and unload Smart in a significant deal, such as Okafor.
Coined the CelticsBlog term, "Euromistake."

  • GOT IT!!!
I feel like this a done deal already. Parker is not the same guy anymore and they should move on.

Would be a good team but still feels 3rd in the pecking order in the West.

Yep, they badly need a starting PG.
And he would be a nice fit.

What? The Spurs just finished the season with 67 wins and tied the 1986 Cs record with 40 home wins. I know they just lost to OKC, but their plan is to replace their aging PG with a better one who is much younger. The Spurs new core is pretty exciting, even without Conley.

Plus, we have no idea what is going to happen to OKC this offseason or next.
