Good news for our BRK swap next year, too, since you know the Nets would LOVE to add Conley.

I can't imagine why he would want to leave Memphis to sign with Nets. I also can't imagine why he wouldn't pick many other situations before the Nets. Playing with Brook Lopez and Thad Young and no young talent or shooters? Brutal...

The Knicks at least can offer a mix of a legit star (Carmelo) a rising young talent and a competent starting center (Lopez) with playing at MSG. Brooklyn has nothing.
to be fair to the Nets RHJ looked like a real talent before he was injured.  They also have McCullough who if he wasn't injured could have been a late lottery pick last year.

They also play in Brooklyn and have a fair amount of cap space.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Is there much difference between Brooklyn and Memphis minus Conley?

Brook Lopez + Thad Young (both 27yo) vs Marc Gasol + Z-Bo (31 and 34)
RHJ (21yo) vs TA (34yo)

Jeff Green and Courtney Lee were traded away. They are a big loss to Memphis' superior depth in quality. Now all they have is -- Matt Barnes who is a 35yo bench player. Vince Carter who is a 39yo bench player. Lance Stephenson is completely unreliable. Mario Chalmers is probably the Grizzlies next best player. Brooklyn don't have much either. Only notables are Bogdanovic and Jarrett Jack.

Is there really that big of a difference?

Brooklyn did a terrible job of filling their supporting cast last year. With a capable GM filling out those spots (and without injuries to Jack + RHJ) that team could have easily been a 35-40 win team. Is Memphis any better than that without Conley? I don't think so but even if they were it wouldn't be by much.

Throw Mike Conley on top of that -- Nets core + quality bench players -- and they should be a plus .500 team and a playoff team in the East.

The Grizzlies, without Gasol for a lot of the year, without Conley for a similar amount of time, and had 28 players in uniform throughout the season, doubled the amount of wins that Brooklyn had.  There is a much bigger difference between the two than Conley.  Also, if the Nets add Conley, they will have less cap room than the Grizzlies do with Conley's cap hold, so their ability to improve is less.

If Conley wants to win, he will not choose the Nets.  The team that I'd like to see make a run at him is the Magic.

What about Payton in this case?

Interesting.

Actually, I love Conley's game and he's on my FA list since Durant's not leaving OKC.

And signing him frees the Cs up to move IT off the ball and unload Smart in a deal for more help, such as Okafor.

Rightly so. One of the top PGs in the league.

Interesting. I have heard this sentiment before, but I don't look at Conley like he is anything more than an average starting point guard. Where would he fall in your rankings?

Probably 6th or 7th.

Got the main guys at the top = Steph Curry, Westbrook, CP3
Then John Wall and Damian Lillard.
Kyle Lowry had a great season. He deserves to be ahead of Conley for now.

Then Conley.

After Conley, I have Kyrie Irving. Jeff Teague.

------------------------------

I think Conley rates as one of the best defensive PGs in the league. He is also one of the best at organizing and running an offense. A good scorer who can drive and shoot. A really good playmaker whose assist numbers are probably lower in Memphis' offense than they would be elsewhere. And a solid rebounder.

A very well-rounded PG. No real weaknesses. Someone who is rock-solid across the board and very good at a few things (defense, floor general). These qualities also make Conley an easy player to fit alongside almost anyone. A very good teammate. A winner.
Agreed.  I think Conley is not a stats guy but I guy you watch for a few games and realize he runs a good offense, plays solid team ball and good defense.  I'd love him on team, not sure how he fits without big moves though.  Add Conley you need a lights out Sg.  Add Conley log jam at pg, who do you move?  Oh to be danny
