He's a restricted free agent. Spurs will match any reasonable offer, and the most he can be offered in year one is about $5.6 million.
Can you explain why the most he can be offered in one year is $5.6 MM? He's a restricted free agent, can't anyone offer him up to the max?
I think the only way Boban can be had is if a team signs him to an offer sheet as soon as free agency starts. If he gets enough that it would hinder the Spurs potential other plans then I doubt San Antonio matches.
The Gilbert Arenas rule limits what you can offer restricted free agents with 1 or 2 years experience to the mid-level exception in the first two years. Beginning in year 3, the contract value can jump to any amount up to the max salary. If the player's original team matches the offer, they take a cap hit equal to the players salary in each year. If the player's team does not match the offer, his new team takes a cap hit equal to the contract's average salary each year. This is so a team doesn't lose its restricted free agents before they have Full Bird rights. It is the type of contract that Houston signed Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik to a few years back.
