You can make the case that Marcus Smart is the Draymond Green of guards, becuase he can guard seemingly anyone within reason, people up to 6" taller than him. He's extra strong and tough like Green and also both players are exceptionally long for their height.
Also the only area where they can struggle is scoring the basketball. They can both add a lot by passing and handling. Green clearly better at both though right now.

Green is avg 14ppg this year, but last year only 11.7 and he changed the game.

Attest is self explanatory how he relates to Smart he was just bigger. Surprisingly Artest maxed out at 20ppg. Which would be fantastic if Smart ever got there.

actually, smart reminds me of smart more than anyone else. i dont think i have seen a player quite like him. not sure any sort of comparison would do justice to those of us trying to understand him as a player.

I've been saying for over a year that he could be the combo guard version of Ron Artest. He's graduating to that comparison. He started with Tony Allen as a floor. The next level involves comparisons with Dwyane Wade, but that's only in the unlikely event he develops into a #1 scoring option. If he maxes out at Artest as a SG, that's cool, because that's an extremely valuable player to have in 2016's NBA.

I've been comparing him to Ron arrest for awhile. Not the defensive star arrest was yet but could definitely be not too long from now. Ugly choppy offense. It's the best comparison i can think of.

He had a fantastic game. When Tommy said something like " this kid is gonna be a star" I cringed. I just wish they'd tone down the hype. Just let him be without all the unfair expectations. Being the next Tony Allen or even better Ron Artest at guard is plenty good enough.

I'm thinking Kawhi at PG.

Same. Especially bc kawhi wasn't a great scorer or shooter his first few years in the NBA either.

Eh, sorry, Leonard came into the league shooting .375 from three and never looked back. Not similar to Smart at all.

Did Kawai ever have to play half a season with a terrible ankle injury?

Like Rollie said, we all give Jae the benefit of the doubt with regard to his injury & associated shooting-- so why not treat Marcus the same way?

Kawhi was a better shooter still for sure but he did play with better players and no injuries. They're not that far off overall when you take into account not just shooting but everything.

come on now.
Smart: 33%, 25%
Leonard: 38%, 37%

not comparable.

Although you could make the argument Marcus could shoot much better if he took just 1.7 3s per game like Kawhi did his rookie year.

Nice taking this year's  #s for Smart only  ::) Lets not forget Leonard got a ton of open looks early and still does in the Spurs system. Also  Leonard plays his actual position on offense also helps. But yeah we can ignore that and the injuries so you can hate on Smart.

I don't think pumping the brakes on a comparison to a 24-year-old 2 time DPOY, Finals MVP and budding superstar = hating on Smart.  He can be an excellent player without ever rising to Kawhi's level.

I think the last young guy I can remember having that kind of defensive impact and stepping up for his team on offense might be ... Paul George?

George was actually similarly inept on offense for the Pacers the first two playoff runs he was a part of.
