According to a source close to James who discussed the matter with him Monday night, that's not why James unfollowed the Cavs. He did it as part of his process to prepare for the playoffs.

There is precedence for this. James puts away all forms of social media once the playoffs begin, to cut all distractions and sharpen his own focus on the task ahead. He calls it Zero Dark 23. He did it last year.

You can hate on LeBron for that last bolded bit. Anyone thinking he's doing this in preparation to leave Cleveland in free agency probably should acknowledge his/her own confirmation bias.
I wonder if Lebron can put away his social media as well as he has put away his outside shot this year?

Convinced LeBron does this stuff , ie sending out "cryptic" tweets knowing it'd be analyzed ad nausem and the lemmings would soak it up.  He's literally just amusing himself.

Basically he's trolling.

And the #1 rule in Internet community? Don't feed the troll.

Then why didn't he just say that when asked about it?

He made no effort to dispel that notion after being asked about unfollowing the Cavs on Twitter. He stared off into the distance, urged reporters to move on to the next question, and then immediately shut down the entire session after being asked the next question, which was purely a basketball question and had nothing to do with Twitter, Instagram or the like.

Maybe he thought it was a stupid question unworthy of a response?

But it's not a stupid question. Has he ever unfollowed a team on twitter when he goes "dark"? I think the way he handled the situation is stupid. If he had told the reporter it's because I want to concentrate on basketball and do this yearly, it would've been a non-issue. However, the childish way he handled the interview has only caused more speculation and then it seems as one of his guys had to a bit of damage control and put a spin on it.

I'm not sure if he unfollowed anyone, but he certainly goes dark during the playoffs.  Maybe the 14 accounts he unfollowed were the ones that provided the most bings on his phone.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Bigs - Shaquille O'Neal, Victor Wembanyama
Wings -  Lebron James
Guards - Luka Doncic

I'm also calling bull on the "confirmation bias" thing.

I remember people trying to sell that exact same type of stuff when we saw LeBron change his number from 23 at the same time Miami was clearing cap space.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Lebron is way too passive-aggressive. It doesn't serve him well. A person in his position doesn't need to be passive-aggressive.

He isn't stupid. He knows people will read into silly things like unfollowing his team's twitter account. Yet he keeps doing these things.

He does a lot of things that don't endear him to many.

SB Nation came out with an amusing piece on Bron Bron's nicknames just today:

Quote
Here is a fun fact about basketball player LeBron James: His name starts with the prefix "Le," which is French for "the." It's true!

For a variety of reasons, some people don't like LeBron James. Some of these people have found a particularly effective way of expressing their distaste for him. They take whatever insult they want to say about LeBron James, and then they put a "Le" in front of it. It does not matter if this word shares letters or sounds with "LeBron," has the same amount of syllables as "LeBron," or really in any way, shape, or form resembles the word "LeBron." As long as there's a "Le," these people figure they have made an insightful, clever joke about LeBron James.

We spent several hours searching Twitter for every combination of "Le" and random negative words we thought people might put next to LeBron James' name. About 90 percent of the time, somebody on the internet had actually used that dumb insult. The stupider we got, the more people had actually used the insult we assumed nobody would be dumb enough to use.

This glossary is the result. We tried to find tweets where people earnestly used the insult rather than tweets where it was included as a joke or part of a list.

Right. Zero Dark 23 = preparation to lose again in 2016.
