The Pelicans shut down Davis for the remainder of the season. It seems like AD still wanted to play to try to earn a spot on the All NBA team.  Seems like the management is trying to ruin AD's chances to get that extra 24 million on his contract. I feel that this might (and should) become an issue when the time comes (assuming he is now out of the running for All NBA) for the players union to handle.

Sitting out AD gives them a better shot at tanking for the draft, and favorable cap outcomes (4-5 million less a season)

My guess is that tanking goes as much into NO's analysis as saving money does. But yeah, either way, it sucks for AD.

The voters for the all-NBA team should give it to him just to make a point to the Pelicans and to the league in favor of players' rights.

I don't know about that. They likely out of the bottom five, and so they're looking at something in the 6-9 range.

Does it makes sense to alienate their best player to increase the chances of #6 vs. #9?

gives them more chances at Simmons/Ingram. Seems like the right move for management, at the cost of their best player.

is he injured? If he is injured what is the controversy?

If he is not injured, then his agent should sue.

He's definitely injured.  I think the debate is that he's been playing through his shoulder injury (and playing well) up until this point.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I guess all we can do is sit back and hope for a trade demand. Don't worry, AD, we will make sure you are All-NBA every year.  ;)

So New Orleans gets to sit him because it's better for them financially and for draft picks if he sits.  Does that mean it's okay for Davis to sit himself in the future if he feels it's better for him, even if he hurts the team?  That's the message New Orleans is sending.

What a dissapointing year for New Orleans. I know there were a lot of injuries but they still played horribly all year. I expected them to improve and grow after their playoff appearance last year.

The team has no hope of getting anywhere further than an 8th seed sweep, so it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to force your franchise stud player to play through injury (and risk long term issues) if you really have nothing to play for.

If I were them, I would probably do the same - let the guy rest, give it a go next year.

Davis is a top 5 player and only in his early 20's, you don't want to do anything to risk his long term health.

Earlier in the year they were starting to play well and looked like they might have a shot to make a playoff run, but that's fading now so may as well rest him.

If I'm New Orleans, I give him the extra money.  Sign of good will and will keep him happy and healthy.
