His routine is terrible. He is a good shooter and would hit his free throws at a much better rate without his dumb routine.

I'm curious why anyone thinks what he does before the shot motion matters.
At least where I come from, coaches encourage young players to find a routine, and to stick to it every time they shoot a ft.
The point is not *what* you do, the point is that you *do* have a routine.
The idea is simple: shooting ft's is something you want to automate (get into 'muscle memory') as much is possible. Clutch time or fatigue shouldn't matter, your ft should come off the same, every time.
So the little routine is intended to give you a little breather, time to focus, and turn the 'autopilot' on.
